Architectural promenade

A charming small medieval city, Sint-Truiden showcases multiple testimonies of its rich past. The unmissable church of the Beguinage, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts visitors with its impressive collection of murals, but there are also plenty of other historically significant sites worth discovering, including Huis Nagels, a splendid property, dating from 1892, previously the house of a notary and which combines several architectural styles. In good weather, the city's inhabitants enjoy a pleasant walk around the old ramparts.

The Belfry of Saint-Trond, a symbolic tower

The Belfry of Saint-Trond, a symbolic tower

Originally constructed from wood in the 13th century, the belfry was rebuilt in stone in 1606. Part of the Town Hall, it rises 150 feet/46 meters above the Grand-Place. Designed in Gothic style, and equipped with a magnificent carillon of 50 bells (which still ring to this day), the current tower remains the symbol of the history and medieval architecture of the city. Since 1999, it has been classified as one of the most important belfries in northern France and Belgium, when it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The medieval city and cathedral of Metz

The medieval city and cathedral of Metz

Metz is a rare treasure–a medieval city with so much more to offer. There is Saint-étienne Cathedral, the Cour d'Or Museum, Place d'Armes and Place Sainte-Croix. There are also the many alleys, including Taison and En-Fournirue, where the Maison des Têtes–the former Récollets convent which now houses the European Institute of Ecology– can be found. Medieval Metz looks to tomorrow–not least like its modernist Center Pompidou, by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban.

Visit to the citadel and village of Sierck-les-Bains

On the Luxembourg border, on the French side, the small town of Sierck-les-Bains has its feet in the Moselle and its head turned towards its citadel. Despite countless assaults and bloody battles over the centuries, the medieval castle, former residence of the Dukes of Lorraine, has retained its towers, fortifications and underground passages (where the former torture chamber is located). From its ramparts, admire the surrounding landscapes covered with vineyards and orchards.
