This Scandinavian triptych begins in Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital city, popular with fans of the great outdoors, gastronomy, architecture and design. It continues through Norway, to Ålesund, where Art Nouveau houses of wood and brick line the fjords of Hjørund and Geiranger. The journey continues through Norangsfjorden, Glomset, and, further north, the extraordinary Træna archipelago. In these picture-postcard settings, small villages and colorful fishing ports are scattered among the mountainsides that plunge into the icy waters. The adventure ends in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, where you can stroll along the Baltic Sea in a city intertwined with rivers and forests.

Copenhagen, the ultimate outdoor city

Cycle paths crisscross the Danish capital and offer endless bike rides alongside its roadways, while its shores offer open-air swimmers plenty of places to dive into the Baltic Sea. In the heart of the city, the wooden pontoons of Islands Brygge attract bathers and sun-worshippers in equal numbers–the water is often cool but always clean. In 2019, CNN named Copenhagen number one in its rankings of the world's best swimming cities.

The fishing port and its Art Nouveau architecture

When they are moored at the quayside, cruise ships and Hurtigruten vessels dominate the port's vast warehouses and other monuments of the city. Here on the edge of the Norwegian Sea, a gateway to some of Norway's most beautiful fjords, Ålesund seduces travelers with its colorful houses on the water's edge. Although known primarily as a fishing port, this medium-sized city also captivates visitors with its superb Art Nouveau architecture.

While Ålesund is located south of the Arctic Circle (near the city of Tromso), it is possible to observe the magnificent Northern Lights there. During autumn and winter, around midnight–when the weather is clear and there is strong solar activity–these unmistakable streaks of green and purple neon will fill the night sky and create memories that last a lifetime.

Atlanterhavsparken, a unique saltwater aquarium

A short distance from Ålesund, just along the coast, you'll find the impressive saltwater aquarium Atlanterhavsparken, Norway's first marine science center. Perfectly integrated within its natural setting, the site offers the chance to observe and interact with starfish, crabs and sea urchins. As well as introducing the underwater world of the fjords, it also offers a window into the animal life of the North Atlantic, with its resident seal and penguin populations.

Traena, an ideal island for fishing

Traena, an ideal island for fishing

Traena island is home to just 440 inhabitants or so, but just as many fishing rods. In the small port of Husøy, the old fishing boats and other trawlers have belonged to the same families for generations and have navigated these waters in search of herring, skrey and cod, taking advantage of the waters of the Gulf Stream and the relatively sheltered corridor formed by the archipelago. Climb the island's hills to enjoy a view of the surrounding inlets, islets and reefs, as well as its puffin colonies – the species easily outnumbers the island’s human inhabitants.

Whale-watching

In the Traena archipelago, the island peaks sometimes resemble marine mammals, while the rocks that rise from the waters bring to mind the dorsal fins of orcas or the tails of humpback whales. Depending on the season, these species pass along the coast, on the trail of migrating herring to feed on. Luck and a little patience are often necessary to spot these mammals, but this famed archipelago, near the Arctic Circle, offers an excellent chance to observe them in their natural habitat.

The Vasa: ship and museum

The Vasa: ship and museum

When the Vasa capsized on August 10, 1628, in the port of Stockholm, it was the most powerful ship that had ever been conceived. Built on the orders of Gustav II Adolphe, King of Sweden, this 52-meter-long three-masted ship was equipped with some 64 cannons. Raised from the waters in 1961, the ship has since been completely reassembled–almost all of the artefacts presented in this unique museum are original. Discover a unique retelling of 17th century history for lovers of maritime heritage.

The metro, an unexpected art gallery

The metro, an unexpected art gallery

Ever since its creation in 1950, the Stockholm metro has been dedicated to fine art. With more than 90 stations covered in bas-reliefs, mosaics and paintings and filled with sculptures, the Swedish capital's metro is effectively the world's longest underground art gallery, with stations transformed into caves (Rådhuset), forests (Solna Centrum), rainbows (Stadion) and more. A particuarly imaginative way to explore the city.
