A view of Ostuni, from Corso Vittorio Emanuele II

A view of Ostuni, from Corso Vittorio Emanuele II

To fully appreciate the beauty and architectural uniqueness of Ostuni, it's worth taking a step back to take in the view. From Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, the city reveals its dazzling white walls. From its promontory, at an altitude of 715 feet, Ostuni overlooks plains covered with olive trees, vineyards and fig trees, just a few miles from the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The city's whitewashed houses and religious buildings draw the eye–the landscape seems entirely focused on the city.

A stroll through the heart of Ostuni, ‘the White City’

A stroll through the heart of Ostuni, ‘the White City’

Its inhabitants claim that Ostuni is the most dazzling white city in the world. First mentioned by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD, the city continues to attract and seduce visitors with its architectural uniqueness and slow pace of life. Within the city walls, the houses, ancient palaces, small chapels, and churches are all covered in lime. Among its pretty squares, some dwellings are connected by striking arcades or staircases. Ostuni, ‘the White City,' is truly spectacular.

Visit the sassi cave dwellings

Visit the sassi cave dwellings

A backdrop to cinematic works by Italian director Pasolini as well as James Bond, the streets and cave dwellings sassi of Matera form an astonishing film set. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, the sassi and its churches carved into the rock form an architectural ensemble comprising more than a thousand dwellings, all harmoniously integrated into this limestone landscape. Monasteries, individual houses and small shops coexist with caves and towering rocks. Abandoned in the 1950s, the city of Matera has since reinvented itself and is undoubtedly worth a trip in itself.

See Matera at night, from the belvedere of Piazzetta Pascoli

Piazzetta Pascoli offers an astonishing perspective over the city, with a roof terrace that offers a unique panoramic view of the sassi. At night, a unique atmosphere of mystery and silence reigns: While the city bustles behind you, in front of you, it's as if time stopped still several centuries ago. Under the light of lanterns, isolated figures wander its stepped alleyways, which you'll want to explore yourself.

Panoramic views over the Bay of Naples

Panoramic views over the Bay of Naples

Though the traditional expression is 'See Naples and die,' a more accurate version might perhaps be 'See the Bay of Naples and die,' as the city boasts what is arguably one of the world's most beautiful coves. Reaching higher ground is a chance to gaze upon its teeming streets, the Mediterranean's changing colors at dawn and dusk, and the silhouette of the towering–yet ever-threatening–Mount Vesuvius. Castel Sant'Elmo is one of the best vantage points for admiring this ancient city.

The mystery of the Vallone dei Mulini (Sorrento)

The mystery of the Vallone dei Mulini (Sorrento)

Beyond the picture-postcard prettiness looms history... and mystery. Sorrento's industrious mills of old have now become enthralling, vegetation-covered ruins. The former site of Vallone dei Mulini, located near the city, is an unexpected hideaway of suspended time, where nature has reclaimed the site from human activity, leaving a magical atmosphere to reign among these rocky walls.

Taverna Estia Restaurant

The pretty little herb garden at the entrance sets the tone as soon as guests arrive. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, like a family. The chef embarks on a refined and complex creative process, working with his team to produce elegant, evocative dishes that can sometimes be stunningly original. The results are unique, hearty dishes that bring together the very best ingredients the sea and land have to offer. The extensive wine list gives pride of place to sparkling wines.
