Romantic walks along the Gulf of Naples

Could the Gulf of Naples have been created to celebrate love? The vestiges of the ancient sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum remind us of both the beauty and fragility of our world. Under the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius, Neapolitans live life with passion! Maybe it's because of the incomparable landscapes found along the Amalfi Coast and on the islands of Capri and Ischia, where you'll find an endless series of botanical gardens, sandy beaches, and rugged coves and inlets. You can swim in search of moray eels and mermaids before sitting down to relax on a cafe terrace. Everything here exudes elegance, including the last home of Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti...

The mystery of the Veiled Christ of Sansevero Chapel

The mystery of the Veiled Christ of Sansevero Chapel

The nave of the former funerary chapel of the Sangro family is home to one of Italy's most beautiful treasures: the Veiled Christ. Created by sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753, this marble statue takes the form of a life-sized Christ in repose, covered by a transparent shroud. Remarkable for its astonishing finesse, this sculpted veil appears as if it were real fabric, revealing even the finest features of his face and body. Carved from a single block of marble, the masterpiece amazes all who enter the chapel.

Taste the ‘Tear of Christ’: the vines on Vesuvius

Taste the ‘Tear of Christ’: the vines on Vesuvius

According to Neapolitan legend, the roots of the vines that grow on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius touch the volcano's molten magma. What's without doubt, however, is that the name of the wine produced on these estates is Lacryma Christi, which translates to ‘Tear of Christ.' The wines of the appellation are produced from local grapes–Caprettone, Piedirosso and Greco– and benefit from remarkably fertile soil and the Mediterranean climate. While these wine-growing estates are often small, they spread across some 15 municipalities, with many open for visits and tastings.

The antique shops of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

The antique shops of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

Is it because of its name meaning “land of the mermaids” that Sorrento attracts divers? Snorkeling and diving spots abound along the peninsula amidst shipwrecked ruins, grottoes and caves. And each dive at Punta Campanella brings new wonder. Maybe it's because this natural marine reserve is very close to the Li Galli islet, described by Homer as marking the home of the mermaids.

Boat trip to the Li Galli archipelago

Boat trip to the Li Galli archipelago

There was a time when only actors, dancers and other artists could land on the Galli Island – this archipelago of three islands was once the property of world-famous choreographer Rudolf Nureyev. According to legend, it is also the home of sirens who tried to lure Ulysses in The Odyssey. While you can't disembark on these private islands, they remain a pleasant destination for lovers of boating excursions.

Amalfi, a coastal city that looks to the sea…

As the oldest Maritime Republic in Italy, Amalfi remains a city apart. This former city-state boasted up to 70,000 inhabitants before a terrible earthquake nearly erased it from the map in 1343. Today, its 5,000 inhabitants work to preserve the beauty of its white facades, small squares, and lovely fountains in remembrance of this tragedy and in the pride of having given their name to what could be the most beautiful coast in all of Italy.

Lose yourself in the Gardens of Augustus

Lose yourself in the Gardens of Augustus

Created by the Emperor that gave them their name, the Gardens of Augustus immediately offer you the most spectacular view of the Faraglioni, the legendary rock formations just off the coast of Capri. At the beginning of the 20th century, German industrialist August Krupp redesigned the Gardens by placing monumental fountains and statues throughout. He also constructed a magnificent path paved with flagstones that winds down in a series of hairpin bends to the Marina Piccola far below.
