Cascais, surfers' paradise

Far from the giant waves of Nazaré or Peniche, both unmissable stages of the World Surfing Championship (WCT), the golden sand of Guincho in Cascais has established itself in recent decades as a favorite spot for surfing enthusiasts. Bordered by high dunes and imposing cliffs, the site offers the strong, consistent waves sought by experienced surfers, while winds blowing from land to sea delight kitesurfers and windsurfers.

Visit the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego

There are few places in the world dedicated to individual female artists. The Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, designed by the prestigious Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, pays homage to Paula Rego, a major figure in Portuguese painting known for her ‘dreamlike realism' works. Opened in 2009, this museum, dominated by two pyramidal terracotta-colored concrete structures, showcases paintings, engravings, drawings and lithographs by this astonishingly versatile artist, accompanied by works by her husband, the British painter Victor Willing.

Visit the Medieval and Renaissance Palaces of Évora

Formerly a residence of the kings of Spain, Évora today boasts pretty whitewashed homes with tiled roofs. Between the narrow streets, houses decorated with azulejos ceramic tiles and wrought iron balconies offer true architectural harmony and a tranquil atmosphere amid the ramparts. Spared by the great earthquake of 1755, the city speaks to the golden age and power of Portugal in the 15th century.

Walk through the cork oak forests

Walk through the cork oak forests

The Alentejo is something of a paradise for cork oaks. Thanks to soil and a climate that's particularly conducive to its growth, this species has become the very symbol of the region. With a growing area covering 2,700 square miles, Portugal is the world's leading producer of cork. After strolling through one of the countless cork oak forests (known as alcornocales), you'll encounter unique crafts where the bark is transformed into small boxes and other original objects.

Stroll through the narrow streets of Porto Corvo

The village of Porto Corvo is perched on cliffs between sublime white sandy beaches. This traditional destination offers an ideal stop for anyone following along the coast. Featuring pretty white houses, each painted a distinctive blue at ground level, visitors gravitate to a central square that's typical of 18th-century Portuguese architecture.
