Flagstaff, a must-visit stop on Route 66

Flagstaff, a must-visit stop on Route 66

With a name that pays homage to a flag-raising ceremony held on July 4, 1876, marking the first century since American Independence, Flagstaff, a pleasant university town at the foot of the mountains, has since become something of a meeting point for bikers and a diverse cultural melting pot. The famous Route 66 crosses the town for more than 12 miles/twenty kilometers, offering old-fashioned diners and microbreweries in an atmosphere that is simultaneously nostalgic and trendy.

Lowell Observatory and the Discovery of Pluto

Lowell Observatory and the Discovery of Pluto

The first city in the world to be designated an International Dark Sky Place, Flagstaff is home to the famous Lowell Observatory, a listed historic monument. It was here that the dwarf planet Pluto was discovered in 1930, though Percival Lowell inaugurated his observatory in 1894 to study Mars. The complex now houses an observation site with six ultramodern telescopes and an ‘open planetarium' on the rooftop.

The Painted Desert: multicolored sandstone of the badlands

The Painted Desert: multicolored sandstone of the badlands

Like the palette of a great painter has been overturned on this high plateau in Arizona, mixing hues of red, pink, orange and yellow, the Painted Desert almost seems to have come straight out of a museum. Sculpted over millions of years by natural erosion and the wind, the sandstone and clay landscapes also known as ‘badlands' are located in the heart of Petrified Forest National Park.

Taos, one of the oldest inhabited sites in the United States

Taos, one of the oldest inhabited sites in the United States

Far from any modern skyscrapers, Taos Pueblo is an astonishing group of dwellings and ceremonial centers founded several centuries ago by Pueblo Indians. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, the pueblo, with its rustic adobe walls, offers a rare and precious architectural testimony to the long presence of indigenous Indians. Today, it is located in a cosmopolitan city, rich in artists and artisans.

Earthship Biotecture: autonomous architecture

Earthship Biotecture: autonomous architecture

Earthship tells the story of a utopia. Near Taos, the architect Michael Reynolds has imagined and designed dwellings made from recycled materials. Open to the horizon, they produce their own electricity and benefit from their own temperature-regulation and water-recovery system. A visitor center helps you understand this new way of ‘inhabiting' the city, in harmony with the environment.

It dominates the Rocky Mountains, of which 78 of the 100 highest peaks are located in this same state. Known as the ‘Gentle Giant,' it is a meeting place for keen hikers who take its various trails to the summit during summer months. In winter, it attracts skiers who come for some of the lightest powder in the world.

Independence Pass, on the trail of prospectors

Independence Pass, on the trail of prospectors

Accessible only between the end of May and the beginning of November, this winding section of State Highway 82 is among Colorado's 25 most scenic roads. Created in 1881 for miners, this narrow passage, with steep slopes and tight turns, is something of a journey in itself. Having crossed Independence Pass, you can discover the remains of the small town of the same name, once an El Dorado for miners but now a ghost town...
