What is the weather like in Mexico in January?

Mexico enjoys a dry and pleasant climate with temperatures in January averaging 30 °C on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.Nevertheless, take some jumpers if travelling North – to Mexico City, for example – where temperatures average 8 °C in the morning and 20 °C during the day; perfect weather for strolling around the city and exploring the wider metropolitan area with its 170 museums and cultural sites.

Things to do in Mexico

In Mexico, children receive their presents for Epiphany, allowing you to really make the most of the festive Christmas spirit.
In the east, Yucatán offers holidays that promise to relax, thanks to the magnificent white sandy beaches of Cancún and Playa del Carmen, and enthral with an exploration of Maya country, visits to the Tulum ruins, an archaeological site facing onto the sea, not forgetting Chichén Itzá, one of the seven wonders of the modern world!

Inland, take some time out at Agua Azul, where the waterfalls and natural pools provide welcome refreshment and an opportunity to swim.
Finally, on the west coast, book an excursion to watch humpback whales mating and giving birth to calves conceived the previous year. Unless you would prefer to watch the astonishing Quebrada divers launching themselves over thirty metres, day and night!

You choose: head for southern Tanzania and coastal areas in January to enjoy very pleasant temperatures of around 28 °C. Otherwise, the climate is cooler in the north and prone to showers.Zanzibar promises the perfect weather for swimming. January is ideal for trekking on the Tanzanian side of Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, as temperatures are comfortable enough for climbing.
Further north, go on safari in the Serengeti National Park, where you can see The Big Five: elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes and rhinos. Lastly, on the coast, visit Dar es Salaam, a port city with a national museum that tells the story of the civilisation of Black Africa.

In Zanzibar, there are plenty of activities geared around wildlife, as you can swim with wild dolphins in Kizimkazi, visit the giant tortoises on Prison Island and photograph Colobus monkeys in the Jozani forest. You can also spend some special time with the Maasaï people to find out more about their traditional dances, as well as local crafts.

A rather pleasant climate awaits you in South Africa, with temperatures of between 20 and 30 °C in January. However, there are wide variations between day and night, as well as some risk of rain inland towards Johannesburg and Kruger National Park.

For safaris, go to Kruger National Park or Limpopo – visit the spectacular nature reserves and set about watching the animals and birds. In the Northern Cape, you can visit the diamond city of Kimberley, while the Western Cape offers magnificent beaches and lush vineyards around Stellenbosch and Paarl. Design capital, Cape Town, is another must-see while staying in South Africa.

Temperatures are unlikely to exceed 10 °C, often falling below freezing in the morning and averaging 5 – 8 °C during the day. But this time of year, we want to see snow on these beautiful mountains!

Things to do in the Alps

Of course, the main activities to be practised in January are skiing and snowboarding! But many resorts also offer quirky activities like snowshoeing and dog sledding for alternative snow-based fun. At the Chalet du Mont d’Arbois, for example, you can experience the extraordinary by sleeping in a suite at 1,850 metres altitude and flying over Mont Blanc the next day on board a small private plane!
