Over a period of twenty years, Christian Louboutin, founder of the eponymous couture brand, has developed a passion for the south of Portugal, particularly the tranquility of the small village of Melides in Alentejo, ten minutes from the Atlantic coast. The designer has opened Hotel Vermelho, a traditional property whose sky-blue façade is decorated with ceramics by sculptor Giuseppe Ducrot. They give a hint of an interior that is both baroque and joyful, with décor designed by Madalena Caiado. Here in this property, the owner invites guests to taste ‘la vie en rouge’, having called on the best artisans and some of his artist friends to contribute to its aesthetic, creating plaster sconces, magnificent wall frescoes and fascinating optical illusions. Typically Portuguese, but inspired by Louboutin's favorite color, the red tiles lining the floor of the bar come from the famed Azulejos de Azeitão ceramic factory. The hotel is also decorated throughout with furniture, antiques and objects taken from the owner’s private collection. The hotel’s rooms and suites, most with their own terrace that open onto the garden and swimming pool, each boast their own original style. Xtian restaurant serves tasty, bistro-inspired Portuguese cuisine using local artisanal ingredients.

Their daughter Stefania is now at the helm of Il Luogo, alongside the Chefs Fabio Pisani and Alessandro Negrini, who produce a creative cuisine: their style reveals unsuspected flavours. Their dishes are the fruit of both traditional and contemporary techniques, and give perfect expression to the complex culinary heritage bequeathed by the culture and nature of Italy.

This hotel is the dream child of Carlino Cinque, who was passionately in love with this place and commissioned a villa on a promontory with breathtaking views of Praiano, Positano, the coast and the rocks of Capri. In the course of time, this dream grew, as did the hotel. Its many rooms have each a private terrace and a wonderful sea view. The interior details include fine terracotta floors with ceramic decoration and doors adorned with frescoes. The story of this old mansion dates back to 1377, when its first landowners came to farm the land above the Idrijca River. Countless generations of the Gleize family have looked after this 18th century post house. The balconies, the mosaiced walkways and the almond-green shutters are the work of Jany, the latest in the line. In the kitchen he reinvents the Provencal recipes of grandmother Gabrielle, with traditional flavours. Sweets are a tribute to Jany’s father, Pierre, a confectioner. Sample the delicious lavender honey ice cream served in it’s bee hive. A vegetable and a landscaped garden blend flowers, fruit and vegetables. In the heart of Uruguay’s most exclusive seaside resort, Chef Jean-Paul Bondoux has recreated a piece of his native Burgundy. In a quiet residential area of Punta del Este, surrounded by a magnificent garden, Bondoux produces authentic French cuisine using products from his own farm, like zucchini flowers stuffed with chicken or roast rack of lamb in garden herbs. “My cuisine is close to the land,” Bondoux says. “I love thyme, rosemary, garlic, onions, tomatoes – everything that comes from the earth.” The boutique next to the restaurant pays tribute to the terroir of France with brioches, croissants and cheeses that can’t be found anywhere else in Uruguay.
