On any trip to Johannesburg these days ought to include a visit to Soweto. Even though this 'city within a city' became known the world over for its symbolic defiance of apartheid starting in the 1970s, Soweto remains a place unto itself. To get an understanding, head to the Hector Pieterson Museum which memorialises the crackdown on June 16th, 1976 when extreme violence was used to crush a demonstration by youths from the township.
