Soweto (South Western Township), Johannesburg

Soweto (South Western Township), Johannesburg

On any trip to Johannesburg these days ought to include a visit to Soweto. Even though this 'city within a city' became known the world over for its symbolic defiance of apartheid starting in the 1970s, Soweto remains a place unto itself. To get an understanding, head to the Hector Pieterson Museum which memorialises the crackdown on June 16th, 1976 when extreme violence was used to crush a demonstration by youths from the township. Also visit the 'No. 8115' museum, at the home where Nelson Mandela lived before his arrest. If you want to explore the neighbourhood on foot, ask your hotel to book an official guide.

Johannesburg art gallery

Imagine there was a space where works by Courbet, Pissarro, Monet, De Chirico, Rodin and Léger sit alongside the leading figures in contemporary South African art. Such a place exists! It's located in the city centre, just yards from the lawns in Joubert Park. The art gallery's exhibitions are world renowned. Such as the 'Africa Remix' exhibition which was shown at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2007...

Zambezi River in a dugout canoe

Zambezi River in a dugout canoe

Feel unique as you float in a dugout canoe along the Zambezi river: home to hippos, crocodiles and varans.  You sail right at the river level, at the pace of the wildlife. With all of your senses alert, feeling the vibrations of the river and the slightest noise or movement, concealed in the vegetation above the banks. Was that a buffalo … or an elephant maybe? Surrender to nature, fragile yet content...

Bathing near Victoria Falls

Bathing near Victoria Falls

Forming the natural border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls are the largest in the world! So impressive are the power and the noise of the water that the locals called it: Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning 'The smoke which thunders.' During the dry season from August to January, the Zambezi's riverbed lowers to form the 'Devil's swimming pool' on the Zambian side - a natural cavity beside Livingstone Island. This reservoir is great for swimming and boasts unrivalled views of the entire site.
