Explore the De Hoop nature reserve’s coastline on a guided walk at low tide. Over three hours, you will discover the remarkable riches of this protected area, from its spectrum of colors to the diversity of the species that inhabit it, from anemones and abalone to starfish, sea urchins, and the area’s impressive mussel beds. Keep your eyes peeled: you might be lucky enough to spot an octopus hunting among the rocks.

Guided seaside walks

Rediscover your adventurous spirit and set off on a two- to three-hour hike through the De Hoop nature reserve. Amid the Cape’s typical fynbos landscapes, you can see herds of eland, Bontebok and mountain zebras, as well as many species of birds. A true haven for fans of nature and unspoiled wilderness.

A corner of paradise

For an exciting, unforgettable experience, set off with friends or family to explore De Hoop nature reserve’s golden sand dunes. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views from the summit, and an exhilarating return trip as you slide down the sand. To familiarize yourself with this unusual activity, you can start by sliding while seated on your sandboard before trying to stand up. De Hoop nature reserve is renowned for being one of the best places in the world for land-based whale watching. Right outside De Hoop's Morukuru Family Lodges, the bay is a completely protected natural environment and an ideal place to spot these fascinating giants. The best time of year for enjoying this magnificent spectacle is between July and the end of October, when you can admire the extraordinary ballet of these cetaceans from the beach, the sand dunes and even your own suite. Expect moments of pure magic!

Whale watching

Explore the coastal landscapes of De Hoop and contribute to the preservation of marine ecosystems and its distinctive fynbos shrubland through an itinerary offered in addition to your stay. This includes a visit to the Turtle Conservation Centre at Cape Town Aquarium, as well as a chance to meet the teams working to combat invasive species threatening the reserve. It also provides insights into the challenges of running a sustainable lodge–one that is entirely self-sufficient in terms of solar energy. To help make the best of these opportunities, a two-night minimum-stay at Morukuru Family De Hoop is required.
