Etape fictive

An essential destination for any visitor, and an unrivalled gateway to the rest of Argentina, Buenos Aires is a city bursting with energy. You'll feel it in its French-inspired cafés, in tango halls filled with the sound of traditional concertinas, and in the spirited atmosphere of its football stadiums. This is a uniquely charming capital that's full of contrasts, from historic La Boca to trendy Palermo, via bohemian barrios like San Telmo, against a backdrop of historic Spanish architecture and ornate Belle Epoque splendor.

Argentine Polo Open Championship in Palermo

Argentine Polo Open Championship in Palermo

I have been a big fan of polo since I was a child, and when I arrived in Buenos Aires I was dying to see the Polo Open Championship in Palermo. Polo is a very popular sport in Argentina and, every year, this tournament attracts 50,000 spectators. It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, and the level of the riders and horses is extremely high. I play polo at a much more modest level (0 handicap), but I still take great pleasure in it. I have a few horses and, from time to time, I play with employees, family and friends at Il Borro.

Relais & Châteaux Aramburu

Relais & Châteaux Aramburu

A true hidden gem, gourmet restaurant Aramburu is nestled in Recoleta, an upscale neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Chef and owner Gonzalo Aramburu chose this place to establish himself and honor local culture and Argentine products. Minimalist decoration, based on a palette of dark hues, harmonizes with subdued lighting. In each of his plates, Chef Aramburu captures the culture and culinary art of his home country, while adding his own touch of creativity. Dishes are prepared in an open kitchen, allowing guests to appreciate his dexterity and the complex techniques employed by his team. Let yourself be overwhelmed by scents of aromatic herbs as a prelude to its renowned 18-course menu, where each bite is a delight for the senses. A wine list, featuring more than 120 labels, ensures you can find a food and wine pairing that suits.

Caminito, Buenos Aires

Caminito, Buenos Aires

This street, located in the working-class La Boca neighbourhood, was the inspiration for the famous tango 'Caminito', composed in 1926 by the great Juan de Dios Filiberto. Today it is a kind of open-air museum, with a succession of artist's workshops, craftspeople, little Italian restaurants (especially Neapolitan ones) and more. This area, with its bohemian spirit, seems to exist outside of the city, to the sound of bandoneons and guitars…

El Ateneo bookshop, Buenos Aires

El Ateneo bookshop, Buenos Aires

Walking into this bookshop on Santa Fe Avenue is like entering a museum. It is a place of surprising beauty, where the shelves resemble works of art. It is actually an old theatre, founded one hundred years ago, converted into a cinema and then a bookshop. The seats have gone but the long red curtains and gilding remain. You can find more than 120,000 books here. I generally prefer biographical books and novels, though which you can discover the lives of the great men who shaped the world we live in. The bookshop is open until midnight at the weekend.

Estancia Santa Catalina, the Footprint of Jesuit Builders

Near El Colibri, discover the Jesuit Estancia of Santa Catalina founded in 1622. This architectural gem is the very illustration of Jesuit settlement in the region. As bona-fide builders, the Jesuits left an important imprint in the region with the renowned estancias of Córdoba: Alta Gracia, Jesús María, La Candelaria and Caroya all listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and associated with the Jesuit assembly of downtown Córdoba.

The Grape Harvest Festival, Mendoza

Since 1936, the Fiesta de la Vendimia, held around the first weekend in March, has been bringing together wine lovers from all across South America. During the Acto Central, close to a thousand dancers come together to celebrate the year's harvest. Throughout the town there is a party atmosphere, with dancing and singing. El Nirantal, Villa La Angostura

Art and conservation are the main issues here. Through the items it produces, the El ñirantal project aims to preserve the culture and heritage of the Mapuche Indian community. Their textiles, carpets, ponchos and wooden items are produced in line with fair trade principles. The simultaneously modern and traditional objects that are produced in their workshops continue to draw attention to the memory of the ancient peoples.

Waterfalls and panoramic views

Waterfalls and panoramic views

This is one of the most spectacular walks in the area: climb to the lookout point known as Belvedere to discover Correntoso Lake at the foot of the mountains and its three branches leading to the superb Nahuel Huapi Lake. This landscape, forgotten by man, seems to have remained unchanged for millennia. Away from the rocky cliffs, a steep trail leads to the spectacular Incayal waterfall, which is 50 metres high. A real immersion in the heart of the Mapuche Indian territory.

The Arrayanes forest

The Arrayanes forest

Located in Nahuel Huapi National Park, the splendid Arrayanes Forest is home to a rare species of tree, recognisable by its golden bark, related to the myrtle tree. The arrayan tree grows very slowly and remains vulnerable due to the presence of humans and animals. Nevertheless, the average age of the trees in this forest is nearly 650 years! A discovery trail winds through the forest and marks off the area open to visitors. You can reach the site by sailboat from the Las Balsas hotel.

Perito Moreno glacier, Province of Santa Cruz

Located in Los Glaciares National Park, the Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the most famous in the world. Everyone has seen pictures of the ice falling and crashing into the lake opposite. According to scientists, the glacier is advancing by two metres per day, but is not shrinking. Perito Moreno is almost 5 kilometres wide and 170 metres high (about a hundred of which are underwater). I dream of bringing my children here, so that we can listen to nature's pulse together…

Tierra del Fuego

Tierra del Fuego

Just one mention of Tierra del Fuego and you are transported on a journey. In Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, inside an old bank, is the End of the World Museum. A surprising place, which holds the splendid prow of the Duchess of Albany, salvaged from the water after the British ship ran aground in 1893 in Policarpo bay. You can discover many 'end of the earth' stories here, including those of the old convicts, political dissidents, anti-establishment artists and other anarchists who were sent to Ushuaia. The former 'recidivists' prison is today a naval base, which is also open to visitors.
