In 1992, several events from the Barcelona Olympics were held on the Rio Segre. Since then, the river has been adapted for visitors and has become a public space. If Barcelona opened up to the sea thanks to the Olympics, Seu opened up to the Segre River. Today, it's an ideal place for a picnic or to come take a walk. Here you can practice adventure sports like rafting.

Aiguablava Beach

Aiguablava Beach

Located south of Fornells, the small beach of Aiguablava is a small wonder. In this landscape of rocks and pines, this beach is enclosed within a small cove. Like a postcard, with sand licked by crystal clear water. A few steps away, the ruins of Empúries are home to stunning Greek and Roman remains. A very impressive site...

In the footsteps of Dali and Josep Pla

In the footsteps of Dali and Josep Pla

The locality of Torrent is part of Empordà, a historical region of Catalonia that is divided into two: an upper part and a lower part. Above, there are mountains exposed to the wind; below there are low plains that have inspired surrealists, such as Dali. It is said that the landscape has both a male and female part. Of course, a trip to the Dali museum in Figueras is a must. The inhabitants of this region of Empordà are famous for their creative and artistic character. There is also a very famous writer of the past century, whose heritage is closely linked to this province (comarca), its gastronomy and its landscapes. We are referring to Josep Pla, who provided a unique testimony on the history of the local gastronomy and on the social character of inhabitants. He wrote: La cocina es el paisaje puesto en la cazuela (cuisine is the landscape that you put in the saucepan). How very true!

Hiking on Pic du Canigou

A truly emblematic location in the Pyrénées-Orientales, Pic du Canigou is considered a sacred mountain in Catalonian culture. Experienced hikers, accompanied by a mountain guide, can brave several trails that lead to its summit at an altitude of 9,000 feet. For others, there are numerous paths that wind more gently through the valley, offering magnificent views of the entire massif.

Collioure, on the path of Fauvism

Collioure, on the path of Fauvism

During the summer of 1905, painters Henri Matisse and André Derain paced the streets of Collioure together. In less than three months, Matisse painted more than 15 canvases, 40 watercolors and sketched around 100 drawings; while Derain created some 30 paintings, 20 drawings and around 50 sketches. It was here that the two artists conceived the Fauvism art movement, where large, vibrant spans of color express emotion rather than reality. Tours allow visitors to follow in the footsteps of these two legends, encountering reproductions of their major works en route.

The Yellow Train, a scenic railway journey

The Yellow Train, a scenic railway journey

Locals call it ‘the Canary.' For over a century, the Yellow Train has crossed the Pyrenees, passing through the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park and the majestic Canigou mountain range. From Villefranche-de-Conflent to Latour-de-Carol, the journey covers 39 miles and climbs over 3,250 feet at an average speed of 18 miles per hour. This astonishing panoramic journey, enjoyed in open-air carriages, leads through the highest ski resort in France (at 5,200 feet above sea level) and encounters some 650 engineering structures, including 19 tunnels and 40 bridges.

Hôtel Pams in Perpignan, a jewel of Art Nouveau

Hôtel Pams in Perpignan, a jewel of Art Nouveau

Arguably the city's most beautiful building, this former cigarette paper factory in the heart of Perpignan was built in 1872 before being transformed into a superb private mansion at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Located on Rue émile Zola, its sober facade contrasts wildly with its elaborate interiors. With its grand staircase built from onyx, marble and stucco, artworks and tree-lined patio, the building is a perfect example of fin-de-siècle and Art Nouveau decor. Owned by the city since 1946, the site hosts impressive exhibitions every September during the Visa pour l'image festival of photojournalism.
