With a wealth of grape varieties and very distinct terroirs, Alsace is a land of singular wines. Its Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris grapes provide each vineyard with a unique identity. Here we travel back in time, whether on foot, by bike or front-wheel drive. From Strasbourg to Colmar, the hilly landscapes and atmosphere vary until winter arrives: at the time of the Christmas markets, Alsace lights up and becomes, under the shade of the fir trees, a huge festive party.

At the heart of the Grande île, under the luminous garlands of the great Christmas tree, some 300 log cabins attract a continuous crowd to browse for gifts and the best regional culinary specialities.

Massenez distillery, Villé

Massenez distillery, Villé

In 1870, Jean-Baptiste Massenez was working as a mere grower-distiller. In 1913, his son Eugène distilled wild raspberry for the very first time. One of his main customers was none other than the Queen of Sweden, who said she treated her diseased lungs with eau-de-vie distilled in Alsace! Massenez is part of the distilleries happily perpetuating the tradition of eaux de vie produced with fruits grown in the backyard and local products, which eaux de vie is drunk responsibly… Since the 1950s, they have been present in major Parisian breweries and on the tables of starred chefs.

SlowUp: another way to discover the Alsace Wine Route

SlowUp: another way to discover the Alsace Wine Route

Discovering the Alsace wine route with the SlowUp concept means 'reducing the pace and increasing the pleasure'. The organizers have devised three circuits of 5, 12, and 19 miles through 9 towns and villages (including Scherwiller, Sélestat and Bergheim). On these roads closed to traffic, it is by foot, rollerblade, scooter or bicycle that the wineries are discovered one after the other...

Exploring Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle

Exploring Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle

Built in the 12th century in the heart of the Vosges Mountains, Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle tells an important part in the history of France. Besieged and pillaged during the Thirty Years' War, the medieval fortress was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century at the comman of German Emperor Wilhelm II, who wished to celebrate German culture in Alsace. Perched on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 2,600 feet, it is now one of the most-visited castles in France.

Stroll among Ribeauvillé’s half-timbered buildings

Overlooked by the ruins of three castles, Ribeauvillé is one of the most charming small towns in the region. Its half-timbered houses, with the Tour des Bouchers at its center, will delight history buffs and wine lovers alike: the surrounding terroir boasts no fewer than three Grand Cru AOC wines. Every year, at the beginning of September, the Pfifferdaj (Festival of the Minstrels), the oldest festival in Alsace, is held there, complete with brass bands and colorful floats.

Visit Riquewihr, a village and two grands crus

Riquewihr occupies an unusual spot on the Alsace wine list. Very selective in the choice of its grape varieties, the commune has two grands crus. To the north of the fortress town, Riesling is king on the slopes of Schoenenbourg. Voltaire himself owned a few plots of these famous vineyards. Nearby, the 67 acres of the Sporen area are mainly planted with Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris, and produce a remarkable wine for laying down.

Colmar, the town with 5 Christmas markets

Every year at Christmas time, Colmar establishes itself as one of the capitals of Alsace: throughout the city, 5 markets compete with the quality of their craft products and the sparkle of their decorations. In a festive atmosphere, under the half-timbered houses of the pedestrian streets, the lights and illuminated displays guide strollers from one site to another, from the market in the Place Jeanne d'Arc to the Gourmet Market in the Place de la Cathédrale.
