With the Matterhorn towering overhead, there is no doubt that Chalet Hotel Schönegg in Zermatt is truly located in the heart of the Swiss Alps. The hotel's design reinterprets traditional alpine style, giving a modern twist to natural materials such as wood and stone, and creating a feeling of harmony with the surrounding environment. From the panoramic terrace or guest-room balconies, the epic landscapes and colossal mountains make a spectacular backdrop. Surrounded by 250 miles (400 kilometres) of pine-lined paths and more than 180 miles (300 kilometres) of ski slopes, this is a paradise for hikers, bikers and skiers alike. After the day's exertions, discover the relaxed atmosphere of gourmet restaurant Saveurs, home to chef Maximilian Latt. His fine cuisine sensitively channels the local terroir, with dishes accompanied by wines from an impressive cellar of over 4000 bottles. Some wines have been produced in the local area for more than four generations by the Metry family, owners of the hotel.

Activities, excursions and other attractions during your stay at Chalet Hotel Schönegg

In the heart of Zermatt's ski area

Just steps away from Chalet Hotel Schönegg, the Sunnegga-Rothorn funicular whisks you straight to Zermatt’s legendary slopes. Straddling the Swiss-Italian border, you can ski in the shadow of the Matterhorn on 223 miles/360 kilometers of runs that reach altitudes of nearly 13,000 feet/3,900 meters and extend all the way to the Italian resorts of Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche. And when the snows have melted, head for the Theodul Glacier, where seasoned skiers and snowboarders can enjoy their favorite sport even in the height of summer.

Panoramic terrace

Soak up the views from Chalet Hotel Schönegg’s terrace, facing the snow-capped Alpine peaks and the majestic silhouette of the Matterhorn. The scenery is spectacular in its own right, but it’s best enjoyed with a signature cocktail and local nibbles. From sunrise to sunset, this signature balcony is a delightful destination in which to while away the time.
