Hotel Biaclyn Hakodate has a story to tell. Built in 1908 on a hill in Hakodate’s residential district on Hokkaido Island, the building once housed the consulate of Imperial Russia. It has since been renovated, with the addition of a new wing dedicated to wellness. In the original residence–now the Consulate Wing–two spacious suites of 1,080 square feet preserve the charm of the past, along with a monumental dark-wood staircase, a marble entrance hall with geometric tiling, ornate ceilings and crystal chandeliers. The Wellness Wing features an indoor pool, hammam-sauna area, fire pit and four expansive suites, each with its own sauna, jacuzzi and private garden, and furnished with elegant designer pieces throughout. Such moments of serenity are destined to be crowned by a delightful dinner in one of the hotel’s three restaurants.

Lobster ravioli, crab cakes, farm-raised veal or lamb and turbot fillet–just some of the gourmet dishes offered throughout the seasons, which taste extra special when enjoyed overlooking the water, in the splendid setting of the Hôtel de la Plage. The panoramic restaurant overlooks the ocean and the vast beach of fine sand, only separated by a unique dry stone wall. Over a period of twenty years, Christian Louboutin, founder of the eponymous couture brand, has developed a passion for the south of Portugal, particularly the tranquility of the small village of Melides in Alentejo, ten minutes from the Atlantic coast. The designer has opened Hotel Vermelho, a traditional property whose sky-blue façade is decorated with ceramics by sculptor Giuseppe Ducrot. They give a hint of an interior that is both baroque and joyful, with décor designed by Madalena Caiado. Here in this property, the owner invites guests to taste ‘la vie en rouge’, having called on the best artisans and some of his artist friends to contribute to its aesthetic, creating plaster sconces, magnificent wall frescoes and fascinating optical illusions. Typically Portuguese, but inspired by Louboutin's favorite color, the red tiles lining the floor of the bar come from the famed Azulejos de Azeitão ceramic factory.
