The Hotel Grad Otočec holds an important position in Slovenian heritage culture due to its island location and blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The castle stands on an island in the middle of the River Krka, the only river in Slovenia to create natural islands from limestone deposits.
Over the centuries, Otočec was transformed from a medieval manor house to an impressive Renaissance residence. Yet, it eventually fell victim to the upheavals of the Second World War, being partially destroyed by fire in 1942. From the 1950s on, the owners set about renovating the castle to restore its unique features, a project painstakingly achieved over the years in partnership with local craftsmen and leading architects. Today, fully restored to its former splendor, the castle’s authentic architecture houses a luxury hotel.
