In the heart of the city, a haven of peace lies behind the stone doors of Chaptel Hangzhou. The Shikumen houses which make up Chaptel Hangzhou are emblematic of a pivotal period in Chinese history. Built in the 1930s, they have been carefully restored to preserve their typical character. Inside, traditional and Art Deco furniture has been handpicked from local craftsmen to recreate a period Chinese atmosphere. A true monument to local history, the Chaptel endeavors to preserve the cultural identity of the property.
