Into the wild:|5 chalets to book this winter

Hermitage, Breuil-Cervinia, Italy

If you’re looking for a place with real get-away-from-it-all qualities and views that will leave you speechless, then these 5 secluded spots should be at the top of your travel checklist.

1. Hermitage Hotel & Spa, Breuil-Cervinia, Italy

Sited at an impressive 4,000 metres, the Cervinia ski resort is one of the highest in the world, giving skiers and hikers a dream snow-sure domain to explore. And the Hermitage Hotel and Spa is the perfect spot for unwinding afterwards. Cosy and inviting, the interiors are a mix between traditional Italian wooden chalet and more contemporary styles, the comfortable, spacious rooms come with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountain range, as does the upscale Swiss La Prairie branded spa with large wellness area and an indoor pool filled with pure spring water from the Cervinia mountains.

2. The Ranch at Rock Creek, Montana, USA

Few places have such a magnetic pull as this nature retreat in Montana’s most picturesque countryside. On the banks of a creek bordered by aspens and cottonwoods, this spot is as pretty in the summer as it is in winter. So, whether it’s fishing on the Blue Ribbon stream, riding, or skiing that you prefer, this place has it all, even an award-winning spa. In the guestrooms, a strong equestrian theme prevails, echoing the state’s long ranching history and the locals’ deep connection to the land. However, it’s after sunset that the ranch’s mystical ambience really comes alive; the night sky is a spectacular spray of silver stars, earning Montana its name of ‘Big Sky Country’.

3. Hameau Albert 1er, Chamonix, France

Sought after by skiers and non-skiers alike, the Hameau Albert 1er is sited right by the Mont Blanc and Chamonix-Mont Blanc’s impressive domain of 248 miles of slopes, however it also comes with lots to keep you busy if you want to stay indoors. Founded in 1903, the boutique hotel with its pared-down wooden cabins is an institution for its laid-back farmhouse atmosphere, its two-star cuisine with a Piedmont and Liguria influence rustled up by new chef Damien Leveau, and of course, its Bachal spa. The star attraction here, is the heated outdoor pool boasting steamy vistas of the soaring snowy peaks that surround the chalet.

4. Tennerhof Gourmet & Spa de Charme Hotel, Kitzbühel, Austria

A family-run hotel sited in a large garden planted with fruit trees, Tennerhof’s main draw are the panoramic views of the legendary Streif ski slope (also known as the world’s steepest ski slope). However, for days when you just want to cosy-up indoors, the hotel’s award-winning spa, which floats above the rooftops of the small town of Kitzbühel is the ideal hideaway. The indoor pool looks out over the Tyrolean mountain range, and steam baths and a large Finnish sauna welcomes guests in need of unwinding. Wood panelled, or beamed rooms come with big bouncy beds and views of the rolling hills that make it difficult to get up and leave.

5. Matakauri Lodge, Queenstown, New Zealand

On the peaceful Lake Wakatipu, cradle of the ancient Maori legends, Matakauri offers one of the most serene landscapes in the world.. The panoramic views of mountain ranges tumbling into the icy blue lake visible through the chalet’s windows are no less than astounding. The interiors are sober and comfortable – who needs lavish interiors when you’ve got views like these? In the day, the sun streams in and hits the lake so it glows an iridescent blue, and at night, the splash of stars in the sky above is so intense you’ll lose yourself in the swirls of constellations for hours at a time. If there ever were a magical place to stay at that’s sure to stir your soul, this is it.
