Texel sheep, emblem of the island

Texel sheep, emblem of the island

A source of profound local pride, this breed of sheep takes its name from the island itself. Known for the quality of its wool, its milk (which produces excellent cheeses), and its tender meat, Texel sheep have been raised outdoors for centuries on pastures swept by winds and sea spray. In fact, their presence has even shaped the island's landscapes in turn. On Texel, there are almost as many sheep as there are human inhabitants (approximately 10,000).

The Kaap Skil Museum offers an astonishing contract between its modern setting, made from glass and recycled wooden boards, and this incredible heap of treasures recuperated from shipwrecked boats at the bottom of the Waddenzee. In fragments, we discover the story of the Dutch East India Company and the history of windmills. Between the collections, visitors can learn how to make ropes and smoke fish.

Thalasso therapy and Spa Treatments, Norderney

An island of contrasts, Norderney is considered Germany's oldest spa resort on the North Sea. The island, which was a summer residence for the court of Hanover, remains a holiday resort which is prized for its 19th century houses and endless beaches. Between walks and bike rides, you can refresh yourself with spa treatments, saunas and jacuzzis, a dip in the sea, etc.

Between countryside and poetry, Norderney

A biosphere reserve, the Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer is particularly impressive when the tide is out, giving more space to the skies of the north. At the heart of the nature reserve, only the two islands of Borkum and Norderney allow access by car. But it was to the latter island that the German poet Heinrich Heine came in search of inspiration.

Sylt mussel farming

Sylt mussel farming

The nutrient-rich waters around the island of Sylt are particularly conducive to mussels, who thrive and reproduce here. The shellfish harvested here are particularly known for their fleshy consistency, rich flavor and large size (they are left to mature for more than two years). From the port of Hörnum, between the end of June and the following April, you'll see a ballet of trawlers dedicated to rearing shellfish. Here on the island, mussels are most often enjoyed directly ‘from producer to consumer.'

Visit Hörnum Lighthouse and enjoy panoramic views

The lighthouse at Hörnum is the only one of five on the island that's open to visitors. Located on its southern tip, the red and white striped tower has become an emblem of Sylt. The lighthouse was built in 1907 and once housed a small school, between 1914 and 1933. After ascending its 138 steps, you'll reach a platform that offers an unrivalled view of the island and the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve.
