Enjoy an intimate picnic in one of Sri Lanka’s traditional watch huts, set high on the mountain behind Dunkeld Factory, as you take in stunning views over rolling tea fields and the Castlereagh reservoir. In the early days of the tea industry, before motorized travel was an option, tea planters would conduct inspections across vast field or forest plantations on foot or horseback. At midday, they would take a break under the shade of a tree or the shelter of a makeshift hut. Inspired by those earlier times, today’s ‘Planters' Lunch’ has become a more refined, four-course meal served in tiffin boxes.

Bringing together the subtle flavors of tea (not to mention its health benefits), the Tea-Infused Dinner is a signature culinary experience unique to Ceylon Tea Trails. Teas grown in different areas of Sri Lanka have distinct flavor profiles, and have a different effect when paired with other ingredients, depending on the method of preparation. Earl Grey-cured fresh salmon; Moroccan mint tea-crusted lamb cutlet; or vanilla panna cotta with minted fresh fruits and hibiscus tea sauce are just some examples from a menu designed to appeal to the intellectual curiosity and palate of any gourmet.

Tea-infused dining

There are no fixed menus here: every day, the chef at Ceylon Tea Trails creates menus tailored to guests’ personal tastes, using produce harvested directly on the estate or sourced from neighboring farms. You’ll savor this bespoke cuisine in spectacular settings, whether on the sun-drenched terrace or overlooking Lake Castlereagh.

Tea Trails is perched at an altitude of 1,250m in Sri Lanka’s Ceylon tea region, bordering Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands World Heritage site. Stay in one of five authentic tea planters’ bungalows, each one of which has its own charm. Lakeside Castlereagh, Summerville and Dunkeld, Norwood with panoramic views, and Tientsin, the most traditionally colonial of the five; they are all decorated with period furniture. Observe life on a working tea estate, savour the gourmet cuisine, and be pampered by a personal butler. This is the ideal setting for trekking and biking against the breath-taking backdrop of mountains, lakes and waterfalls.

Take a stroll through an authentic Ceylon tea plantation. From your bungalow, trails weave through forests and cultivated hillsides, offering superb views of the landscape. Led by a naturalist guide, you'll observe local wildlife, learn to identify birds by their song, and follow tracks left by nocturnal animals. On foot or by bike, this expedition reveals a territory uniquely shaped by the cultivation of tea, where nature and traditional skills coexist in harmony.

Along the tea trails

Explore the Sri Lankan Highlands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, led by a local guide and naturalist. Rainforests, high-altitude grasslands and protected natural reserves comprise a remarkably diverse landscape that’s ideal for observing endemic flora and fauna. Along these trails, you’ll enjoy a comfortable walk, stopping to soak up the scenery and to enjoy spectacular valley views from destination lookouts. This is a chance to experience nature at a slow pace, in harmony with the environment.

The Central Highlands

Climb Adam's Peak–one of the most famous mountains in the world–in the company of one of our trail guides. There is probably no mountain in Sri Lanka more famous, and certainly none associated with quite so many cultural and spiritual beliefs than Sri Pada–Adam's Peak. The mountain, which rises to 7362 feet, is sacred to at least three religions: principally Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus. It is notable for a large depression on its summit that resembles a foot, to which all three religions draw significance. The climb takes approximately three and a half hours (the way is paved with steps) and the trail is flanked by the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary–one of Sri Lanka's highest protected forest reserves. Views from the top are stunning, especially early in the morning as the warmth of dawn lights up an endless vista of forests, valleys, mountains and lakes.

Climb Adam’s Peak

Visit the Dunkeld tea factory and take a guided tour led by an expert. You'll learn about the history of tea cultivation, the daily lives of the first settlers, and the centuries-old techniques used to draw out the full aromatic richness of the tea. Armed with the ability to recognize and appreciate different teas’ flavor profiles, your tour concludes with a tasting of several teas.
