family-run ryokan for 10 generationsalong the Katsura Riverformer Buddhist templeNoh theater performancesprivate in-room dining

In Izu, on the banks of the Katsura River, Asaba has been welcoming guests for over five centuries in the spirit of time-honored Japanese tradition. This family-run property, passed down through 10 generations, was founded in 1484 when Yakuro Yukitada Asaba opened an inn opposite the Buddhist temple where he was the caretaker. The establishment perpetuates its heritage in simple, elegantly designed wooden spaces that open directly onto nature. Outside, baths fed by the Shuzenji hot springs immerse you in this idyllic landscape. Inside, Japanese cedar baths lend a soothing fragrance to the air. Exquisitely prepared cuisine, made with regional ingredients, is served in the privacy of your room, as is ryokan tradition. The property's Noh theater, which was relocated to Asaba from Tokyo by the seventh generation of owners, regularly hosts some of the greatest masters of this traditional art form. Stays at Asaba immerse you in this land of legends, where every detail helps create a truly evocative experience.

Traditional entertainment enjoyment

Japanese traditional entertainment is held in our historical outdoor Noh performance & stone stages. The gorgeous Noh performance stage was reconstructed 110 years ago from Tokyo. Almost every month we organize a different traditional performance for a guest to keep our tradition for the next generation or to the world as our mission. The experience would be profound and quiet moment of elegance.
