Cannes, Aix, Avignon, Arles, Patrimonio and Perpignan: over many decades–in some cases since the end of the Second World War–these iconic southern French destinations have become renowned cultural hotspots synonymous with some of the world’s greatest artists. Each year, whether for just a few days or several weeks, their sun-drenched streets, ancient sites, forests and beaches become vast improvised stages for outdoor concerts, screenings beneath the stars, and dances and exhibitions in breathtaking, unexpected settings. Collectively, they unite thousands of people from all walks of life, offering unforgettable encounters along the Mediterranean.
Every year, for 10 days, Cannes becomes the global epicenter of cinema. Since its first edition in 1946, the city’s La Croisette boulevard–at the heart of the festival’s activities–has cultivated the art of contrasts and superlatives, offering a daily parade of stars from the silver screen. And the magic still works–for actors and film lovers alike. On Saturday, May 23, on stage at the Louis Lumière Auditorium, a unique tribute: Korean director Park Chan-wook will present an honorary Palme d’Or to Barbra Streisand before announcing the 2026 winner of the Palme d’Or. Who will succeed It Was Just an Accident, by Iranian director Jafar Panahi? The secret will be kept until the last possible moment.

A must-attend event for lovers of classical music, the Aix-en-Provence International Festival of Lyric Art has historically been dedicated to the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Così fan tutte was the first opera performed outdoors here in 1948, at the open-air Théâtre de l'Archevêché, or Archbishop’s Theatre. In 2026, Strauss, Henze, Bartók and Filidei will share the program alongside Mozart. The main concerts and operas will take place at the Grand Théâtre de Provence and the magnificent Théâtre du Jeu de Paume, an 18th-century Italian-style venue, alongside the Archbishop’s Theatre. The festival’s new director, Ted Huffman, aims to “revisit the classics while giving significant space to contemporary creation, demonstrating that lyric art remains a living art.”

Each year, Avignon becomes the capital of French theater, attracting audiences from around the world. Whether attending a performance of Paul Claudel’s The Satin Slipper by the Comédie-Française in the Cour d’Honneur of the Palais des Papes, or an intimate play by Nathalie Sarraute, every way of imagining and experiencing theatre unfolds in la cite des papes (the city of popes). Spectators revel in classical or lesser-known texts, unexpected encounters and magical moments. In 2026, for the festival’s 80th edition, director Tiago Rodrigues will present an especially rich program. Whether you’re among the ‘In’ enthusiasts, who frequent the festival’s official events, or more of an ‘Off’ devotee, hungry for culture in even the most unexpected circumstances, the show unfolds on every street corner as much as its established stages.

Martin Parr, Abbas, Nan Goldin, Sebastião Salgado, JR, Sophie Calle, René Burri–the list of photographers whose works have been exhibited at Les Rencontres d’Arles since 1970 is unmatched. Each year, the entire city turns toward its festival, with every new edition featuring around 40 exhibitions, each more surprising than the last, staged in unexpected locales, including chapels, abbeys, industrial workshops, convents–even supermarket storage rooms. With its narrow streets, shaded terraces, cafés and Provençal atmosphere, Arles offers a unique meeting place to encounter the world through the art of photography.

First, there is the pine grove and the song of cicadas. Then, the sea facing the stands. And finally, the stage, where, since 1960, some of the greatest names in jazz have performed: Charles Mingus, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Melody Gardot… the list goes on. With a postcard-perfect setting, and sunsets enjoyed between concerts, the oldest jazz festival in Europe remains a benchmark for lovers of the style and its blended musical variants. Tom Jones, Morcheeba, Keziah Jones and Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz are among the headliners of a promising 2026 edition.

Since 1981, the world’s greatest pianists have performed in the shade of plane trees and giant sequoias in the estate surrounding the Château de Florans. Over 45 editions, more than 2,500 concerts have celebrated classical music–in piano recitals, concertos and symphonies–alongside jazz and contemporary genres. Around the village of La Roque d’Anthéron, a growing array of performance venues welcome ever-growing audiences. The festival now extends from the Cistercian Abbey of Silvacane to the quarries of Rognes, via the villages of Gordes and Lourmarin. For the opening night of the 2026 edition, renowned pianist Khatia Buniatishvili will perform a recital featuring Schubert, Schumann and Liszt.

Created in 1990 in Corsica by a small group of passionate amateur guitarists, the Patrimonio Guitar Nights festival quickly attracted musicians from afar. Jazz, blues, flamenco, gypsy or tango–every style was welcome for performances in the Théâtre de Verdure. Over the decades, its convivial atmosphere has drawn numerous international artists. Jeff Beck, George Benson, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Gilberto Gil and others have all played passionately on this open-air stage, keeping the town dancing late into the night. In 2026, Benjamin Biolay, Superbus, Yarol Poupaud and Feu! Chatterton will headline a decidedly pop-inspired edition.

At nightfall, Lama comes alive with the light of projectors. Each year since 1994, arthouse cinema has been celebrated in the heart of Corsica’s Balagne region. Throughout the hamlet and its surroundings, a number of outdoor screens attract locals, regulars and curious travelers. Most attendees follow a cherished ritual: an aperitif, followed by dinner on the terrace, then a film screening to finish. In recent years, in the shadow of Monte Astu (5,000 feet), discerning programmers have presented award-winning films from the Venice Film Festival or the Berlin Festival, often hosted by their directors–such as Olivier Laxe, who came to present Sirat, Jury Prize winner at Cannes in 2025. Expect evenings filled with emotion beneath the Milky Way.

The international photojournalism festival of Perpignan stands apart. Since 1989, it has depicted the world as it is–unfiltered, yet with a rigor and contextual depth found nowhere else. In a world increasingly shaped by social media and unverified information, Visa pour l’image provides an essential role. Each year, more than 25 photographic exhibitions are presented with honesty and purpose, driven by the same desire to document and inform. The highlights of the festival are its evening screenings and debates held at Campo Santo, where photographers, journalists and lively audiences come together around powerful stories.
