The magic of carnival

The world-famous Carnival of Viareggio is one of the most important carnivals in Europe. The museum in Viareggio traces the origin and history of the carnival, and has a splendid collection of giant papier-mâché puppets, including "La Ballerina", which stands more than fifteen meters high. You can participate in a workshop with a papier-mâché master, and create a figurine with your own hands.

The marble quarries of Carrara

Discover the famous marble quarries in which Michelangelo and Canova sculpted their works. In the Fantiscritti quarry, you will witness how blocks are cut from the pristine mountain. Continue your visit at the adjoining museum to discover the history of this rock used by the greatest Italian sculptors. You will have the opportunity to observe artists at work in the museum's studio. In a 4X4, a guide will take you to the top of one of the highest quarries, which culminates at 3,280 feet. A stop is planned to let you savor the famous Lardo di Colonnata, the result of slow-curing in a marble basin along with a mixture of salt, aromatic herbs and spices.

Soak up the old-fashioned atmosphere of Viareggio on a pleasant stroll through the city. The itinerary starts at the Plaza e de Russie, the first hotel built on the Viareggio waterfront in 1871, and continues along the promenade lined with Liberty-style buildings decorated with precious glazed ceramic tiles, magnificent examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Italy.
