Discovering the soul of Peru also means immersing yourself in its culture, its incredible landscapes and its history. For their second stopover, Southbound Escapade bloggers stop at the authentic Sol y Luna, in the heart of the Sacred Valley and a few kilometers from the famous Machu Picchu.

Sol y Luna is a village in a village. You reach this hidden gem by driving through the entirety of Urubamba’s long and narrow main avenue after having made the journey from Cusco’s airport. Once you make it through the main gate, you enter a whole new world which spans further than the eye can see. A plethora of private cabins, or « casitas », fill the vast land along with two restaurants, a spa, a pool, a ranch and a library. The most striking feature: a wonderfully rendered flowery ballet throughout the whole property.
A gorgeous swimming pool is located next to the restaurant, offering guests the possibility to burn some calories while staying refreshed. A gym is situated next to the pool and is equipped with all the necessary equipment for a thorough workout. In the background, an outdoor lounge area is the ideal space to indulge in a page-turner or have an aperitive before dinner.
Around 50 casitas populate Sol y Luna’s vast area. Ours adorns a bright set of colors which recalls Peru’s festive and rich nature. Art work from a local artist and unique to each casita decorate the walls of the room.
Upon arrival, some treats await us on the living room table, a pleasant surprise which was then repeated every evening. The many windows make for a naturally bright room, a feature which we truly appreciate. Our bathroom is quite a stark contrast with the main room which boasts the authentic feel provided by the adobe construction. The modern feel of the annexed bathroom is pleasant and has this sense of cleanliness unique to modern furniture. The space enjoys terrific lighting thanks to the stained glass window which filters the incoming sun rays and refracts its most stunning colors.
Countless activities make Sol y Luna a truly fulfilling experience. A must-do is a horseback riding session with the Andean horses during which you’ll learn the traditional Peruvian riding method. Otherwise, ATV, walks, massages and much more are all possibilities offered for your enjoyment.
Sol y Luna is located in the heart of the sacred valley of Peru. And sacred valley rhymes with Inca prestige.
While the train steams away towards the Lost City, the scenic valley unveils before your eyes, displaying its glorious mountains and fascinating Inca remnants.
Perhaps the most famous Inca site, Machu Picchu is only a two hours train ride away from Urubamba.
Sol y Luna is not only a splendid hotel, but perhaps most importantly a school which is opened to children living in the vicinity. The Sol y Luna foundation sponsors many of these students according to their financial needs and provides everyone with a quality education. We spent three wonderful albeit too short weeks helping the teachers there.
