Relais & Châteaux gift boxes now come in pouches made in South Africa from... plastic bottles! The Joinery, a local South African lifestyle brand, has perfected this astounding technology.
It’s a surprise steeped in such romantic spirit that the recipient is always touched – a Relais & Chateaux gift box is indeed a very special gesture. In an instant, it can take you from the beaches of the Pacific to Venice’s Rialto Bridge, from the coastal calanques of Marseille to the borders of Zanzibar. This is what Relais & Châteaux offers in the form of certificates worth €100 to €1,560 euros, for destinations near or far. Even discovering the surprise is a little journey all its own, for the pouch containing each gift box is born of values that Relais & Châteaux steadfastly shares. It all begins in South Africa, where the pouch was designed by a local artists’ association known as The Joinery.
“Pioneers of the responsible economy”
This brand, founded by sisters Natalie and Kim Ellis, has invented its own fabric, “Future Felt.” “It’s made from recycled plastic bottles,” begins Natalie. “In the textile industry, the way we’re creating sustainable products and transforming waste places us among the pioneers of the responsible economy here in South Africa.” With the articles they’ve been producing in these cutting-edge ways, the two sisters and their staff have already recycled more than 500,000 bottles.
“We’re continuing to expand production as we go,” Natalie adds. Every article they sell is made by local artisans and sewing cooperatives and South African producers around Cape Town. Many of the staff are women, most often household breadwinners. As Natalie explains, in closing, “The more things we produce, the more we can grow, create jobs, and support these highly skilled seamstresses.”
