In this superb 1100-hectare Tuscan estate, time seems to have stood still. The property belonging to Ferruccio is an oasis of charm in the style of a medieval village with a 19th-century villa, farm and outbuildings. An integral part of the region’s landscape are the organic wines and olive oils that are produced here using traditional methods. Whether you are strolling through the narrow streets of the village, relaxing at the pools, indulging in treatments at the spa, or enjoying the flavours and local ingredients of the fine cuisine at Osteria del Borro, you are sure to experience an art de vivre imbued with tranquillity and elegance.
Unique in the world:
In this superb 700 hectare tuscan estate, time would appear to have stood still.
Il Borro, nestling in the heart of a thousand-year-old village, is one of the last hidden treasures of medieval Tuscany. It is as if time has stood still. After the splendour of the Medici family and the House of Savoy, since 1993 Ferruccio Ferragamo has been responsible for conserving this historic building while equipping it with modern comforts. Il Borro offers a range of accommodation including luxury suites located in the medieval village or in Aie and individual villas dotted around its 1100-hectare estate. Guests can enjoy strolling by the old shops, go horse riding in the country or pamper themselves in the spa before taking a dip in the pool overlooking the hills. The food served in the Osteria del Borro and Il Borro Tuscan Bistro will not disappoint thanks to their highly sophisticated traditional Tuscan dishes, which are always accompanied by a selection of the finest wines of Il Borro cellar.
Il Borro offers its guests accommodation ranging from well-appointed, charming suites to the luxurious and imposing main villa: Dimora Il Borro. For some twenty-five years, it has been lovingly restored by Ferruccio Ferragamo and his family, whose aim is to preserve the medieval character while offering thoroughly modern facilities.
The Il Borro’s approach to sustainability is thoroughly modern too. The estate now generates its own electricity, from a field of photovoltaic solar panels. These can produce about 2 MWh a year—enough to power over 500 households. This is over three times the main hotel’s needs and the estate returns renewably-generated energy back into the grid. Four of the estate’s villas have been converted to low-energy properties, where a combination of insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps (which generate green geothermal energy), have drastically cut both consumption and emissions.Water consumption is carefully managed too: the estate’s lakes are used as reservoirs to store rainfall over the year, which is used for both farming and irrigation.
