The Blue Grotto is Anacapri’s best known treasure. The entrance to the cave, most of which is underwater, is so narrow that only the tiniest rowing boats can sail through it and visitors need to lie flat on their backs as the boatman maneuvers the boat through the opening. From the hotel, walk through the historic center of Anacapri and down the lane leading to the cave (stop to see the ruins of Emperor Tiberius’ Villa Damacuta on the way!).
Nothing less than one of the most beautiful views in the world: this is what the Caesar Augustus offers, benefiting from an exceptional location, clinging on to a cliff that overhangs the Mediterranean sea, which blends into the horizon in deep halcyon shades of blue.
One of the island’s most spectacularly panoramic walks, the Sentiero dei Fortini hugs the coastline of Anacapri all the way from the Blue Grotto to the lighthouse on Punta Carena. The route is dotted with rocky promontories, bays as deep as fiords, and the three, 18th century forts after which the path is named. Start the walk at the Blue Grotto and, once at Punta Carena, treat yourself to a refreshing dip in the sea beneath the lighthouse.
Fabulous food, wonderful wines, super service and, of course, views to die for: Caesar Augustus’ La Terrazza di Lucullo has all the ingredients for a meal to remember! For the ultimate in romance, book a special tables by the pool or under one of the trees clinging to the cliff edge. Want to pop the question in total privacy? Make the perfect proposal whilst sitting in the Pensatoio: your own personal dining room facing the Bay of Naples.
Shopoholic? Whether you want to buy a bottle of limoncello liquor, some hand-painted ceramics or splash out on the latest designer fashions, you’ll find just what you’re looking for in the island’s tiny boutique-lined lanes. The perfect souvenir of Capri? Pop into Antonio Viva’s tiny little workshop in Via Giuseppe Orlandi 75, and ask Anacapri’s best known cobbler to make you a pair of his made-to-measure, hand-stitched sandals - while you wait!
Whenever I’m looking for inspiration for my menus, I simply step outside and into the hotel’s kitchen garden! A chef’s paradise, this two-acre plot is abundant in vitamin-rich vegetables, flavour-packed fruit, aromatic Mediterranean herbs and edible flowers – all rigorously seasonal and organic. Guests are free to stroll through the kitchen garden whenever they fancy and, if they like, even help me pick the ingredients for their dinner!
