Known all over the world, Richard Gere is an actor with an impressive filmography: Days of Heaven, American Gigolo, An Officer and a Gentleman, The Cotton Club, Pretty Woman, Chicago, and most recently, Arbitrage. The actor has lived in the New York area for years and is the happy owner of the Bedford Post Inn, a Relais & Châteaux property. "I was born in Philadelphia, but grew up in upstate New York. When I was around 20 I came to New York City to start my career, and have been in the area ever since. Years ago I was lucky enough to buy a place in the Bedford area. Natural beauty and quiet – and only one hour from New York City – that’s pretty ideal."

Restaurant in town. In a superb, light-filled art deco dining room with soaring ten-meter-high ceilings and a view of historic Madison Square Park, this restaurant offers the perfect backdrop for iconic three-star Chef Daniel Humm’s sumptuous contemporary cuisine. His sophisticated creations, like the glazed Muscovy duck with honey and lavender (a treat not to be missed!) emphasize purity, simplicity and seasonal ingredients. Matt Umanov Guitars

Matt Umanov Guitars

Before I was an actor, I was a musician. My father played the trumpet, my mother a little bit of piano, and all of my siblings an instrument of some kind. As a teenager I listened to Dylan and the Byrds, and decided to pick up the guitar. Somehow I ended up with over one hundred guitars, some of which had belonged to really wonderful musicians. I sold my collection in the fall of 2011 and donated the money to various humanitarian organizations helping our Tibetan brothers and sisters. Many of those guitars came from Matt Umanov Guitars at 273 Bleecker Street. Known to fans of Gibson, Martin, Fender and more, this amazing store has been selling, repairing and buying guitars since 1965 and has a collection that any musician needs to see.

Union Square Greenmarket

Union Square Greenmarket

In the northwest corner of Union Square Park you’ll find farmers and produce from all over the region selling their wares four days a week. It’s a one-of-a-kind meeting place with the freshest ingredients in New York and at any time you might find chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants getting advice from these farmers on what’s fresh and best to buy that day. There can be nearly 150 producers there at any time from local farms, fishermen, cheese makers, bakers and more. There is a unique community feel here and you’ll be able to get your hands on fresh, quality ingredients, direct from the source.

Le Rubin Museum of Art

Le Rubin Museum of Art

Blue Note Jazz Club

Blue Note Jazz Club

A must visit for anyone who loves live music. This Greenwich Village staple is the perfect downtown spot, both in terms of atmosphere and the artists who perform. I recently had the privilege of seeing the great Jimmy Scott celebrate his 85th birthday here. On any given night you can see an incredible laidback solo act, an up and coming four-piece, or a high energy improvised group jam so there is something for everyone. Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder and other greats sometimes end up on stage together.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Perhaps the most beautiful museum in the world. Opened in 1872 on the edge of Central Park, two million works of art are hidden among its galleries and reserves. I admit I’m drawn to the Japanese collection and the wing dedicated to Islamic art - they are magnificent. I also like the temple of Dendur in the Egyptian section, offered as a gift by the Egyptian government to the United States for assistance in the preservation of Nubian monuments. The Met is one-of-a-kind, and even had The Mona Lisa on display for several weeks in 1963. What else is there to say?

Bedford Post

Bedford - New York, United States

Hotel and restaurant in the woods. Bedford Post, an authentic country inn just an hour from Manhattan, is the ideal setting for a tranquil getaway. Surrounded by pristine woodlands, this historic residence dating back to the 1780s now belongs to Richard Gere and his partner Russell Hernandez. A genuinely warm, hospitable atmosphere reigns in this temple to the pleasures of body and mind. The Bedford Post offers infinite ways to relax, including yoga courses, as well as more terrestrial delights in its two restaurants: Campagna, which serves flavorful Italian cuisine by Chef Michael White, and The Barn, which offers delicious brunches and breakfasts with homemade bread and cakes. ... Caramoor, Katonah

Caramoor, Katonah

Only five minutes from the Bedford Post, Caramoor is my number one recommendation for anyone visiting the property. This beautiful place has been devoted to music since 1928. Spending a few hours at Caramoor, built by Walter and Lucie Rosen, is a voyage through art history. The architecture provides a complete change of scenery, transporting you to Tuscany or Morocco. Make sure to walk through the Moroccan concert hall – a personal favorite. My family and I come here to enjoy live classical, baroque, jazz and tango. Each year, the amazing Caramoor International Music Festival attracts musicians from around the world.

The John Jay Homestead, Katonah

The John Jay Homestead, Katonah

The home of the ex-New York governor and Supreme Court Chief Justice. A major political figure in American politics during the second half of the 18th century, John Jay was a Founding Father of the United States. His family home, where he lived from 1801 to 1828, is open for visits and provides an in-depth look into early 19th century history and architecture. The site has been listed as a National Historic Landmark. Check their website ahead of time for special events taking place on-site.

The Ward Pound Ridge Reservation

The Ward Pound Ridge Reservation

This is the county’s largest park and everyone enjoys exploring the forests and meadows there. There are farms dating back more than two-centuries to discover and picnic areas dotted throughout that are great for an al fresco bite. We often come here on horseback and cross-country skiers can also enjoy the trail system maintained by the park during the winter. The rest of the year, this serene site attracts bird watchers and butterfly enthusiasts.
