“I grew up in the San Francisco, California area, in a somewhat urban setting. When I was younger, I dreamed of working as a ranger in the forest, but since Stanford University did not offer any nature-oriented qualifications, I chose to become an engineer, earning a PhD in materials science.  I worked for thirty-five years at Intel Corporation, the leading global maker of semiconductors. I joined the company as an engineer and worked my way through the ranks, finally becoming the company's President, CEO and Chairman. Today, my friends make fun of me when I tell them how much fun it is to live in an area without network coverage, in the heart of the mountains on the United States Continental Divide. Away from technology, I indulge in skiing, hiking, horseback riding, dog sledding, hunting and fly fishing. Being able to live in Montana, the "Treasure State," is a dream come true.”

In search of sapphires of Gem Mountain

In search of sapphires of Gem Mountain

As far back as 1892, "Gem Mountain" attracted fortune seekers from all over the country. In one century, hundreds and hundreds of mines have been dug all around the mountain, bringing suffering and rewards. The entrails of Gem Mountain are still hiding many sapphires. People dream of being precious stone hunters, and today you can discover your very own treasure.

Dog sled race

Dog sled race

Jessie Royer is one of the most talented “mushers” in the world: after recording many successes, in 2015 became the first woman finisher in the famous "The Last Great Race on Earth," the Iditarod.   At home on Triple Creek Ranch, the champion musher offers our guests an unbelievable introduction to this discipline that is just as demanding as it is fun. The dogs love running so much it is harder to slow them down than to make them speed up. It is an exciting adventure even if you fall off!

Aspen, "off-piste"

Aspen, "off-piste"

Some 26 ski resorts are scattered over the flanks of The Rockies in Colorado. It seems there are infinite possibilities for back country skiing. One of the biggest and most popular spots sits in Aspen, at Highlands Bowl. It takes nearly 45 minutes' trek in powder snow from the station to the top. While snow cats allow those especially pressed for time - or the lazy - to climb faster, local skiers prefer to climb unaided. The local philosophy on the subject is clear: Earn your turns! For a turn down some of the lightest powder snow in the world...

Biking around Aspen

Biking around Aspen

What makes Aspen stand out is first and foremost the atmosphere. Through its geographical position and history, it is a place that attracts intellectuals, sportsmen and women, as well as lovers of culture. Barbara and I often came here not only to ski, but also to bike on the heights of the city. The vicinity of this chic resort is a cyclist's paradise. And, at 3,687 m above sea level, Independence Pass remains a legendary pass for all professional and amateur cyclists. Once at the top, you realize the view is worth the effort put in…

Dunton Hot Springs

Dolores - Colorado, United States

Hotel and restaurant in the mountains. The last inhabitants left in 1918. This former mining town deep in Colorado has been restored from top to bottom and offers an exquisite retreat. Log cabins and spacious tents provide delightfully comfortable rooms; meals are taken in the saloon which has retained its original character, and provides a convivial gathering spot. The landscape of this splendid alpine valley, nestled in the San Juan mountains, changes with the passing seasons, from pristine white snow to flaming orange in autumn. This magnificent site’s natural hot springs with their life-enhancing benefits are an added bonus. ... Learn moreless

Hot spring bathing

Hot spring bathing

It is impossible to resist the hot springs after which the site is named. Old sepia pictures show worn-out miners enjoying moments of calm in these waters that are naturally heated between 30 and 40°C. In the same former mining town, hot baths remain an extraordinary experience to be enjoyed in daylight, as well as at night. It is perhaps the best way to discover Colorado's starry sky…

Discovery of pueblos, Mesa Verde national park

Discovery of pueblos, Mesa Verde national park

Placed in 1978 on UNESCO's World Heritage List, the Mesa Verde site hosts an unbelievable concentration of houses built in the cliffs between the 6th and 12th centuries. Situated at more than 2,000 m above sea level, these brick pueblos remain a unique testament to Native American culture. Today, there are more than 600 houses in the Mesa Verde national park, the biggest of which have about a hundred rooms!
