Story of a Maître de Maison

Bruce Simpson started his ecotourism career in 1990 working as a guide in the well-known Sabi-Sand Game Reserve of South Africa. Here he worked his way through a variety of industry roles from guiding to lodge management and more with companies like Londolozi, & Beyond and Singita.

In the early 2000s Bruce moved to Botswana to join Wilderness Safaris as the Chief Operating Ofcer for that country based in Maun. After a couple of years of Okavango Delta experience he and his wife Cate moved to North Island as General Manager where their background and experience in high end ecotourism and attention to detail laid the foundation for this exceptional destination to be recognised by a number of high profle awards including Best Hotel in the World’ by Conde Nast in 2006.

In 2008 Bruce and Cate moved to Namibia where Bruce took on the role of CEO of Wilderness Safaris’ operations in that country. Three productive years followed during which time Bruce focused on restructuring and reorganising the business, pioneering ground breaking joint venture partnerships with rural communities and taking the company from strength to strength.

In 2011 Bruce left Namibia and returned to his home town of Johannesburg where he became Chief Operating Ofcer of Wilderness Collection. In 2013 his portfolio was expanded to include business development for the Wilderness Group, as Chief Business Development Ofcer, with a mandate to investigate, negotiate and develop new opportunities for the company in Africa.

During Bruce’s whole career with Wilderness Safaris, and since his working on North Island as General Manager, he has retained responsibility for the Seychelles business and been responsible for the management of North Island. This has kept him on the Island at least every second month for the last 11 years which makes him more than just part of the North Island product and story but part of our history.

As North Island’s Managing Director on a full time basis, Bruce looks forward to spending a lot more time in Seychelles overseeing operations, reservations and sales and marketing in the emerging markets as well as engaging with the various trade and industry partners, government departments and key stakeholder.
