The gardens at Villa Rufolo, a residence that belonged to the Rufolos – a rich family of princes and merchants – are extraordinary. The villa opens onto gardens laid out in terraces with a breathtaking view of the sea below. This same landscape inspired Richard Wagner, who composed Parsifal while staying in Ravello. Every summer, the gardens of Villa Rufolo play host to a festival in honor of the German composer.

The hillside village of Vietri on the Amalfi coast is world-famous for its hand painted majolica. Since the 17th century, craftspeople have taken inspiration from the colors of the landscape in creating motifs and glazes for the ceramics used to decorate both the walls of houses and the facades of monuments. Savoir-faire has been passed on from generation to generation, and Vietri remains an important production center for artistic and traditional ceramics in Italy. These beautiful ceramic pieces can be seen on tables in restaurants around the region. We can recommend the best places to go if you wish to take some home, or watch the craftsmen at work.
