The Elbe Sandstone Mountains

Ralf J. Kutzner

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are surely one of the most spectacular natural features in Europe and just a short train ride from Dresden. Beautiful footpaths meander through the mysterious valleys, ravines, mesas, rock formations and basalt hills. They criss-cross the enchanting forests and follow crystalline streams leading you to ever more stunning scenery. Prized for its flora and fauna, this environment is protected by national park status. The region has numerous wonderful castles, villages and gardens, a legacy of our prestigious heritage. Recharge your batteries in this rambler's paradise.

The Elbe Valley in Saxony

To the north-east of Dresden, the Elbe Valley is the birthplace of Saxony wine-making and European porcelain. The Elbe winds its way through an open landscape of valleys, fields, vineyards, towns and historic cities. As you stroll along, you will be transported to the middle-ages, the renaissance, the Baroque period and then back to the present. Our region is well worth the detour: cycle along the Elbe on well-maintained cycle paths, hop on a local train or board one of the many boats belonging to the biggest and oldest fleets of paddle boats in the world.

Guided tour of Dresden

The artistic city of Dresden has some of the world's most renowned museums, which house exceptional collections. Since the 18th century, these tourist attractions have been among the most famous in Europe. With its grand monuments such as the Baroque Zwinger Palace, Dresden Castle, the fully reconstructed Frauenkirche and the Semperoper Opera, the city has gradually evolved into a unique work of art. It is with great pleasure that I invite you to visit the historic centre of Dresden and come face to face with its history and culture. Whether its your first time or not, it is sure to delight.
