For over 1000 years Tyrolean Grey cows have grazed on the Italian and Austrian alpine pastures. Auener Hof now stands to protect them from extinction.
It was unthinkable for this property to allow a breed to disappear; a breed whose milk is used for exceptional butter, cheeses and yoghurt, and whose meat is delicious. So the Auener Hof decided to join forces with local farmers and create a haven for these grey cows. In order to protect wild herbs and vegetables, they teamed up with the Laimburg Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry. At 1622m above sea level, with a challenging climate, the property has taken significant measures to reduce its energy consumption: wood pellet heating, triple glazing, roof insulation and local hydro-electricity.
