Relais & Châteaux: A network driven by solidarity

On 26 May several highly acclaimed Italian chefs made an active contribution at the Restaurant Da Vittorio to collecting funds to support scientific research.

“Il Gusto per la Ricerca” has decided to donate € 40,000 (of the € 145,600 collected) to the Paris-based Institute for Brain and Spinal Cord Disorders (ICM).

The cheque was officially presented by Jaume Tàpies, International President of Relais & Châteaux, to Professor Gérard Saillant, President of the ICM, at the Maison des Relais & Châteaux on 17 June. Jaume Tàpies stressed that, “this great initiative is a perfect example of our global support for the ICM. For Relais & Châteaux, solidarity and generosity are an integral part of our values.

Gérard Saillant commented that “beyond the financial aspect, we are particularly pleased about the personal commitment of all the members of this prestigious association; this motivates us day in day out to continue in our fight against the disease.”

About the Institute for Brain and Spinal Cord Disorders:

Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, depression, strokes paraplegia… neurological and psychiatric disease affect one in eight people. The Institute for Brain and Spinal Cord Disorders – ICM – will bring together 600 research scientists from 2010 in the heart of the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, where 100,000 neurology patients are examined every year. The best researchers from across the globe will come to work there on 22,000 m2 of laboratory space. The proximity between patient/doctors/researchers testifies to an inestimable hopes and richness. It will foster the speedy development of effective treatments for the greatest benefit of the sufferers. It is very fortunate that Paris has been chosen as the location for this Institute.

ICM will be an international research centre with cutting edge technology. The unique nature of its philosophy and its way of working will introduce a fresh wind into research: the close links between basic research and clinical applications, between the public and private sectors, between promising projects and international teams chosen for their excellence, the importance accorded to carrying research forward and developing business incubators.

In 2008 yet another milestone was reached in the history of ICM: since the laying of the foundation stone in July, construction work has made good progress. The structural work for the eight-floor building will be completed by the summer. The topping out ceremony took place on 3 June in the presence of the 150 workers from the building site and the entire ICM team. Work will continue until delivery in July 2010 and the researchers will move in in autumn of the same year. In 2009 a further milestone was the stepping up of the process of selection and recruitment of the research team with an international application procedure launched on 22 June. Many contacts have already been established with teams in Europe, the United States but also in China and Japan. The process of procuring state-of-the-art technology is also progressing well as invitations to tender will be issued for the procurement of the MRI, electronic microscopes, bi-photons, robots and other automatons. In this way the researchers will have an opportunity to work with the latest generation of equipment.

ICM is hence well prepared. These successive, decisive stages ensure that the ambitious challenge will be able to meet expectations, i.e. to turn ICM into the international benchmark research centre for the neurosciences dedicated to preventing, treating and curing the related diseases.
