Owner of Savelberg
My Route du Bonheur… in the Netherlands

Henk Savelberg has the distinction of having won a Michelin star in four different restaurants across the Netherlands. He has been running his eponymous restaurant in Voorburg since 1999.

I come from a mining family from the Dutch province of Limburg. It was after completing my military service in the navy that I discovered the restaurant business, in France and the Netherlands. Today I live in The Hague, just a few kilometres from my restaurant. This allows me to enjoy the city, the North Sea and the countryside too. This closeness to nature is something that nearly all people in the Netherlands enjoy in their everyday lives, making the most of every moment to walk or cycle along the canals, the polders or the backstreets of the towns, which even today call to mind the Golden Age.

Relais & Châteaux proposes its Routes du Bonheur for your inspiration: they are suggestions of itineraries that you can adapt to your preferences and desired experiences. Our advisors are at your disposal to individualise your routes and help you make reservations at our properties.
Example for a 5 nights stay from 969€*
* Minimum indicative rate per person, subject to availability, on the basis of a double room with double occupancy, including accommodation, breakfast and dinner (menu, without beverages) in the properties suggested for the itinerary.
Activities on site and nearby must be reserved by you.

Manoir «Inter Scaldes»

A delectable manor close to Zeeland’s stunning beaches
Manoir «Inter Scaldes»
Beneath the thatched roof of this superb country house, Jannis and Claudia Brevet have established one of the region’s finest restaurants. This is where Jannis patiently prepares his modern cuisine using local ingredients, such as lobster, bass and veal. The chef is naturally inspired by the riches of the Scheldt on the splendid Zeeland coast. A gourmet experience that I come to enjoy once every year.

The windmills of Kinderdijk-Elshout

Built in the mid eighteenth century in order to drain the polder, the Kinderdijk Elshout windmills have been recognised on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1997. The nineteen windmills illustrate a part of the country’s history: from peat extraction to farming, as well as the terrible floods of the last centuries. In the winter, I come here with my family to skate on the Nederwaard and Overwaard canals.

Delft earthenware

Since the late seventeenth century, the blue earthenware of Delft has occupied a prominent place in the world of pottery. The countless pieces produced here now grace museums all over the world. Until the reopening of the Lambert van Meerten Museum with its exceptional pottery collection, you can take a tour organised by the prestigious Royal Delft factory, founded in 1653 and still operational.

Savelberg

An aristocratic residence celebrating l’art de vivre
Savelberg
It was as if I was drawn here. The first time that I stood in front of this building, set in magnificent wooded grounds, I knew that this was where I wanted to put down roots. After two years of renovations and, nearly fifteen years later, I wake up each morning and look forward to cooking at Savelberg. Two words sum up our ambition: delight and tranquility. This is also the name of the estate.

The tulip fields, Lisse

The magnificent Keukenhof estate is the setting for the largest flower garden in the world. Since 1949, visitors have been coming here to admire the vibrant colours of the tulips. In mid April, for a little over two weeks, some seven million bulbs open up across the 32 hectare site. It is a unique display of these flowers which have become the symbol of the country. In addition to the multicoloured tulips you will also see hyacinths, narcissi, roses and orchids.

Paintings by Mondrian, The Hague

Known as the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, the main museum in The Hague houses the world’s finest collection of canvasses by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, don’t miss his final unfinished painting Victory Boogie Woogie (1944). Works by Kandinsky, Picasso, Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois and Egon Schiele are on display in the galleries of this Art Deco style museum. I love to come here just to wander.

Landgoed hotel Het Roode Koper

The woods of Veluwe envelop our elegant villa with their charm
Landgoed hotel Het Roode Koper
This is my kind of place, far away from everything. Come to this 3000 hectare estate in the heart of the magnificent Veluwe forest to walk, cycle or ride horses. In this unspoilt environment you might come across a family of squirrels or deer. Today it is a haven of peace where visitors come to relax and get away from it all, in the heart of the Netherlands.

Koningsdag, King’s Day

In 2013, Queen Beatrix abdicated in favour of her son Willem-Alexander. With his coronation, the date of the national holiday has changed to 27 April, the young king’s birthday. Come and join in the mass celebrations that take place on the streets and canals of Amsterdam. The entire city is decked out in orange and there is a very warm and friendly atmosphere. Boat trips, picnics, beer and laughter are on the menu until late into the night.

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

This museum, one of the most beautiful in the world, is a must see. After almost ten years of renovations, the Rijksmuseum opened its doors once again in spring 2013. It is a pleasure to rediscover the masterpieces of the Golden Age of Dutch painting in this bright and modern setting. There are twenty four rooms and 1.5 kilometres of galleries to explore, each more beautiful than the last, where you will find Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, Vermeer’s The Milkmaid as well as magnificent portraits by Frans Hals.

Restaurant De Librije and Librije’s Hotel

A culinary great escape
Restaurant De Librije and Librije’s Hotel
Located in a sixteenth century former convent which was converted into a prison in the eighteenth century. This is one of the few hotels on this trip located in the centre of a town. Above all, it also boasts one of the finest restaurants in the country. Since 2008, Jonnie Boer has been offering brilliant and modern cuisine, while his wife Thérèse, a renowned sommelier, chooses the wines to complement his creations.

Relais & Chateaux De Lindenhof Restaurant met Suites, Giethoorn

I have been friends with Martin Kruithof for more than twenty years. Along with his wife Marja, this Grand Chef welcomes you like a member of the family. His dishes are at once ingenious and elegant, and the wine cellar is certainly one of the country’s best. On fine days you can eat on the terrace, overlooking magnificent landscaped gardens, lulled by birdsong and the sound of the canals.

A bicycle ride

Some clichés are hard to resist, especially two-wheeled ones. As the advertisement says, Holland is biking and biking is Holland. In our country, there are 18 million bicycles for 16 million inhabitants. Everywhere and all the time, we ride our bikes. The terrain is flat, with almost no hills, and some 29,000 kilometres of cycle paths allow you to travel through a wide variety of landscapes. Whenever I can, I climb on my bike and go for a ride.

Kasteel Engelenburg

The splendour and delights of a castle in a forest
Kasteel Engelenburg
Owned by Johan and Carin Agricola, this very beautiful nineteenth century castle – the first stones of which were laid in the sixteenth century – has, over the years, played host to the Prince of Orange and numerous famous figures. The 250-hectare grounds include a private forest and a lovely golf course (nine holes / par 72). In the evening, dinner is served in a splendid nineteenth century conservatory, after which you can choose from the 300 Scottish single malts on the menu.

Paintings by Van Gogh, Kröller-Müller Museum

This museum, opened in 1938, is home to the world’s second largest collection of paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. The Potato Eaters, the portrait of Paul-Eugène Milliet and the Flowering Orchards hang alongside masterpieces by Seurat, Picasso, Gauguin and Ensor. Located in the heart of the De Hoge Veluwe national park, the museum also boasts splendid gardens, adorned with sculptures by Rodin, Dubuffet and Jan Fabre.

On the route...

The dolmens of Drenthe

With some of them weighing up to forty tonnes, these dolmens are believed to have been brought here over 5000 years ago. The fifty or so megaliths form incredible tombs, whose origins are still unknown to us. To understand how they were moved here and find out about the tribes who are believed to have brought these Hunebedden deep into the forest, visit the Hunebedden Infocentrum National Museum, located in the neighbouring town of Borger.
