Owners of the Steirereck im Stadtpark restaurant
My road to happiness … around Vienna and Lower Austria

Birgit Reitbauer and her husband Grand Chef Heinz Reitbauer make a splendid couple. He is one of Austria’s greatest chefs, and she is the hostess of the Steirereck im Stadtpark restaurant. She was also named "Woman of the Year 2011" by Relais & Châteaux.

Vienna was one of the most important cities in the world and we are very proud of its history and heritage. I was born and raised not far from the capital, and later moved here for good with my family. There is nothing I love better than walking through the city at daybreak, when the aroma of coffee wafts through the streets as businesses open their doors. Vienna has everything I love: characterful buildings, splendid parks, wonderful bakeries and magnificent concert venues. What’s more, there are vineyards, lakes and beautiful landscapes to explore, all less than an hour away from the imperial palace by car or train …

Relais & Châteaux proposes its Routes du Bonheur for your inspiration: they are suggestions of itineraries that you can adapt to your preferences and desired experiences. Our advisors are at your disposal to individualise your routes and help you make reservations at our properties.
Example for a five-night stay from €1483*
* Minimum indicative rate per person, subject to availability, on the basis of a double room with double occupancy, including accommodation, breakfast and dinner (menu, without beverages) in the properties suggested for the itinerary.

Palais Coburg Residenz

Preserving the past, shaping the future
Palais Coburg Residenz
This 19th century palace is just a short walk away from our restaurant, on the other side of the Ringstrasse. After being entirely renovated, the palace was converted into a magnificent hotel in 2003. It is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the history of the city, as remembered by the old families of the aristocracy. Since 2011, the excellent restaurant has been run by brilliant young chef Silvio Nickol. With more than 60,000 bottles in its six historic cellars, the hotel possesses one of the finest wine cellars in the country.

Relais & Chateaux Steirereck im Stadtpark

At the heart of the park, the hundred-year-old building that today houses Steirereck is a superb example of Art Nouveau. Since 2005, this is where Heinz has been creating his dishes and developing his intricate art. Recognised by the most important critics, his cuisine is completely focused on seasonal produce. In his dishes you will find lots of vegetables and fruits that come straight from our farm in Styria. On the ground floor, we have opened a milk bar in which we offer eight different types of milk and nearly 130 types of cheese. It’s a different atmosphere but the attention to detail is the same.

Musikverein

This is one of the most beautiful concert halls ever built, well known to every classical music fan. Vienna’s Musikverein was opened in 1870, and its New Year’s Concert is always watched by hundreds of millions of television viewers across the world. I was lucky enough to attend two of these concerts, including the 2012 edition, conducted by the musical director of the Vienna State Opera, Franz Welser-Möst. Our two children take part in music sessions. A real privilege.

Zum Schwarzen Kameel

Located at Bognergasse 5, this institution opened its doors in 1618. What was at first just a simple shop selling exotic products and spices has become one of the city’s unmissable cafés. I have been coming here for as long as I can remember, with my parents, with friends, and finally with my husband Heinz. We often meet here, in this typically Viennese atmosphere. A welcoming and relaxing bar, presided over by the remarkable waiters in tail coats …

Taubenkobel

A place to be reconciled with the world
Taubenkobel
Walter Eselböck is the owner and grand chef of Taubenkobel. Along with his wife Eveline, a talented wine expert, Walter has created a combined hotel, bistro and shop. Taubenkobel is located in the heart of a very pretty village, in a 19th century former winemaker’s house. Far from the city, you can enjoy the tranquillity of Burgenland, the sunny terraces and the flower garden.

Kracher wines

Produced on the banks of Lake Neusiedl, the wines of the Kracher estate benefit from a continental climate and particularly favourable soils. With its wonderful sweet wines, the estate could be called our answer to Château d’Yquem! Alois Kracher, who died in 2007, was named "Winemaker of the Year" several times by the prestigious Wine Magazine. Today, his son Gerhard runs the prestigious estate. We offer their wines on our menu at Steirereck im Stadtpark.

The Esterhazy Palace (Eisenstadt)

The Esterhazy Palace is one of the jewels of the town of Eisenstadt. It was built in the second half of the 17th century by the princes of the same name. It was within these walls that the famous composer Joseph Haydn, Kapellmeister at the Esterhazy court, presented many of his compositions. Every September, the International Haydn Festival is held, with numerous concerts in honour of the celebrated musician.

Skating on Lake Neusiedl

Three or four times each winter, we head for Lake Neusiedl. Wearing our ice skates, we spend the day on the lake, like thousands of other families. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to enjoy winter in this way. Everyone skates ¬– children, dogs, parents, grandparents! At the end of the day, when the time comes to set off home again, we are simply exhausted and happy.

Hanner

The art of purity
Hanner
In the heart of the Viennese countryside, this restaurant entices you to leave the hustle and bustle of the city for a little while. Everything here seems perfectly in its place, with regard to both the dishes and the decor. Grand Chef Heinz Hanner is a highly talented chef, who learned to cook by watching his parents at work in the family restaurant. The child has long since surpassed his teachers, much to their delight. Today, the restaurant, gardens and surrounding woods exist in pleasant harmony, with the vegetable garden right underneath the kitchen windows …

Mayerling Museum

On 30 January 1889, a notable incident from our history took place: Archduke Rudolf, son of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and Empress Elisabeth (the famous Sissi), heir to the throne, was found dead alongside his young mistress in the Mayerling hunting lodge. Known to all Austrians as "the Mayerling drama", the deaths have never been explained. I remember coming here with my class as a child, to discover this mysterious chapter of our history. A museum is located in the old lodge and mass is still celebrated on the site.

The springs at Baden

During ancient times, before it became known as Baden, this charming little town was called Aquae. Baden is located not far from Vienna, and many famous members of the nobility came here to bathe in the springs. Queen Beatrice of Hungary took the waters here to try to cure her infertility, and Francis I and Beethoven were also regular visitors. Baden remains one of the most important spa towns in Austria.

Hotel Schloss Dürnstein

On the banks of the beautiful blue Danube
Hotel Schloss Dürnstein
Johann Strauss’s Beautiful Blue Danube could have been written here. Ideally located on the banks of the river, it is more like a castle than a mere hotel. Emperor Leopold stayed here in 1683, and it was here that he learned about the victory over the Turks in Vienna. After being in the same family for almost three centuries, the hotel has belonged to the Thiery family since 1937. It was one of the very first hotels outside France to join Relais et Châteaux. Today, it is a highly sought after hotel, not only for foreign guests but for Viennese guests too … who come here to get married!

Relais & Chateaux Toni M, Feuersbrunn am Wagram

Toni M, aka Toni Mörwald is one of Austria’s greatest chefs. He built his restaurant in the family home he grew up in, between two vineyards. Toni has been able to develop a fusion cuisine that is a mix of traditional produce sourced locally and modern and highly creative cooking techniques. The outcome presents a refined style and some unimagined flavours.

Grafenegg Castle

For several years now, an incredible music festival has been held in the grounds of Grafenegg Castle. This event attracts thousands of spectators and the most prestigious orchestras in the world (the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestre de Paris, amongst others). We went there again last summer. It is claimed that air traffic is diverted during the festival so as not to disturb the music! And if your picnic happens to have been rustled up by Toni Mörwald, what more could you ask for?

The cultural landscape of the Wachau

This stretch of the Danube Valley has some of the most beautiful scenery in Austria, from castles and monasteries to vineyards and rivers. Between Krems and Melk, you will discover paths leading toward the mountains. This area has the best apricots in the country and produces great wine. It was here, in the little town of Dürnstein, that Richard the Lionheart was held captive by Leopold V. Extending over nearly 30 kilometres, the Wachau Valley has been classified as a Unesco World Heritage site for its cultural landscape.
