If you have dreamed of going on safari in this part of South Africa you will find it encompasses all the facets of a life changing experience

Africa is a place of passion, enchantment and incredible diversity. Whales, wines, wilderness, historic gardens, bushman paintings, the panoramic Garden Route as well as polo fields, the magnificence of the great migration. The joy of viewing a lemur, not to mention contemporary art, warm smiles, sunny days, glorious sunsets and our Grands Chefs too. So much to do on one continent! I have been privileged to travel all over the glorious African continent and I personally recommend an ideal safari for you. The fact that each of these 4 camps are owner run or owner managed makes them a truly magnificent experience.

Relais & Châteaux proposes its Routes du Bonheur for your inspiration: they are suggestions of itineraries that you can adapt to your preferences and desired experiences. Our advisors are at your disposal to individualise your routes and help you make reservations at our properties.

AtholPlace Boutique Hotel

A little gem, tucked away in one of Johannesburg’s most attractive suburbs
AtholPlace Boutique Hotel
With its location in the oh-so chic Sandton district, the AtholPlace provides a genuine little oasis which can be elusive in this city. However, this is the Johannesburg of luxury shopping, lounge bars and hip cafés. The hotel maintains a personal size with only ten superb suites. Attentive service, contemporary style, well-tended gardens, modern lines and African furniture offer a tranquil moment before heading into the bush...Con dieci superbe suites, l’hôtel rimane a dimensione umana. Servizio attento, stile contemporaneo, giardini curati, linee moderne ed arredi africani offrono un momento tranquillo prima di catapultarsi nella strada del bush…

Johannesburg art gallery

Imagine there was a space where works by Courbet, Pissarro, Monet, De Chirico, Rodin and Léger sit alongside the leading figures in contemporary South African art. Such a place exists! It’s located in the city centre, just yards from the lawns in Joubert Park. The art gallery’s exhibitions are world renowned. Such as the "Africa Remix" exhibition which was shown at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2007...

Soweto (South Western Township), Johannesburg

On any trip to Johannesburg these days ought to include a visit to Soweto. Even though this "city within a city" became known the world over for its symbolic defiance of apartheid starting in the 1970s, Soweto remains a place unto itself. To get an understanding, head to the Hector Pieterson Museum which memorialises the crackdown on June 16th, 1976 when extreme violence was used to crush a demonstration by youths from the township. Also visit the "No. 8115" museum, at the home where Nelson Mandela lived before his arrest. If you want to explore the neighbourhood on foot, ask your hotel to book an official guide.

The owners, Lente and Adine Roode, gave the name Jabulani to this camp in honour of the first abandoned baby elephant which came into their care for rehabilitation.

Elephant Back Safaris

Fifteen uniquely trained elephants form the nucleus of the herd who take you on an unforgettable elephant back safari. Spanning an entire day you are immersed in the magical world of elephants as they go about their daily lives. Elephants are the keepers of ancient wisdom and to be in their presence one feels a deep sense of destiny drawn from an ancient land which is Africa. During your elephant back safari, your guide will interpret their social behaviour, their feeding habits and how they act as Africa’s great foresters. This is undoubtedly one of the more profound and moving adventures you will ever experience in your lifetime.

Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre

Camp Jabulani has a sister operation called the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) which is dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of rare endangered species. This centre acts as an educational facility for young students who are invited to learn about animal rehabilitation and experience close contact care of orphaned and sick animals at this safe haven. The centre is a non-profitable organisation which ploughs all funds raised back into nature conservation in order to ensure the continued survival of endangered animal species. The centre has established itself as a leading authority on the breeding and research of endangered species and is well worth a visit.

Londolozi Private Game Reserve

Pioneering the safari experience since 1926
Londolozi Private Game Reserve
Following a two and a half hour road transfer from Camp Jabulani you will arrive at Londolozi situated in the heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and the greater Kruger National Park. Londolozi is a Zulu word meaning «the protector of all living things» and is a standalone, family run safari lodge representing 4 generations of the Varty Family. Londolozi pioneered the safari industry in Southern Africa and to this day it remains original, authentic and true to its conservation values. It was endorsed by former President Nelson Mandela with the following quote: «During my long walk to freedom, I had the rare privilege to visit Londolozi. There I saw people of all races living in harmony amidst the beauty that Mother Nature holds»

Leopards

Londolozi is renowned for its unsurpassed leopard viewing. Visit the Londolozi website for a detailed recordal of this unprecedented relationship with wild African leopards at Londolozi spanning 3 decades. The story begins in 1979 when John Varty and Elmon Mhlongo developed a relationship with a single female leopard who began to tolerate humans in her presence. From then until now Londolozi is the place to visit for exceptional leopard viewing.

The Londolozi Village Walk… In the Footsteps of Mandela

This short walk is best taken after breakfast. The village walk allows you to interact with many of our staff and their families who have lived and worked at Londolozi for over 30 years. Starting at the 1926 Sparta Camp, you pass through the Varty boma where the family fire has burned in the same place for over 86 years. Continuing on you pass on your left side the Cubs Den, where children are enthralled under professional tutelage in nature’s outdoor classroom. The walk continues to the entrance of the staff village, where an old Leadwood log serves as a rubbing post. Once you pass through the entrance, you arrive at the evocative land art installation called Freedom’s Way…

Daily Yoga Class

Londolozi is currently the only lodge in Africa to provide a complimentary daily yoga class. You can even select the option for a private yoga class in the luxury of your room or in the shade of your deck overlooking the river. Our fully trained yoga teacher at Londolozi has added the powerful elements of nature to the yoga experience, using both the natural energy of the location and tailor made Asanas, to create a yoga form which is suitable for beginners and intermediate practitioners.
