Right in the centre of Cuernavaca, nicknamed the “city of eternal spring” because of the mildness of its climate, is a sumptuous hacienda in the purest Mexican tradition. In the exotic gardens, amongst the sculptures by Francisco Zuñiga and lush flowers, elegant peacocks strut about near the fountains and blue parrots perch in the trees. Under their tiled roofs, the villas have colonial suites and are decorated with some of the country’s most beautiful antiques and artworks including paintings by José Luis Cuevas, Leonardo Nierman and Carlos Mérida. The cuisine is traditional and generous and there is a choice of excursions on the trail of the Aztecs, including a visit to the Palace of Cortès and exploration of the ruined cities of Xochicalco and Taxco – famous for its silversmiths and silver shops.
