Montérégie

Easily accessible from Montréal, Montérégie is a plain punctuated by ancient hills. The eastern section of the region is delineated by the Richelieu River, a strategic waterway utilized by native traders and coureurs des bois (French trappers) during the era of the fur trade. This historic valley is replete with heritage villages whose architecture harks back to the early days of New France but it is also one of the most fertile regions in Québec. Sediment left behind by the retreating Champlain Sea in ancient times, has created rich soil that nourishes a multitude of farms and apple orchards.

In spring, few sights are as splendid as the fruit trees in full bloom. Summer sees the staging of the annual l’International de montgolfières Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, a colorful hot air balloon festival which attracts dozens of participants and delights adults and youngsters alike. This is the season for a round of golf or touring the region by bike!

Apple picking along the « Route des Cidres » (« Cider Route ») is another fun way to explore Montérégie. The region’s innovative apple producers have developed award-winning ice ciders, the ideal accompaniment to a meal at one of the many good tables in the region.
