In the Basque Country’s Urdabai Reserve, a landscape characterised by lush green and narrow valleys merging into estuaries, Arteaga Castle rises dramatically, with its neo-gothic tower made of limestone stone and marble from Ereño. The original tower dates back to the 13th century, however the current structure was built in 1856 when Napoleon III and his wife Eugenia de Montijo restored the tower because their son was proclaimed an honorary citizen of Biscay. In 2000, Garbiñe Azkuenaga acquired the castle, with its |unique combination of history and natural surroundings|, and spent three years transforming it into a stunning hotel, masterfully combining period features with modern elements.
