Unique in the world: Originally owned by Thomas Jefferson’s son-in-law, Thomas Mann Randolph, the property is said to have been the hideaway of the “Grey Ghost of the Confederacy”, Colonel John Singleton Mosby, during the Civil War
It was in Charlottesville’s Blue Ridge Mountains that three early presidents and founding fathers of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe, built their homes. Many others have fallen under the spell of this part of the world after a stay in this lovely historic hotel built in 1799. Originally owned by Thomas Jefferson’s son-in-law, Thomas Mann Randolph, the property is said to have been the hideaway of the “Grey Ghost of the Confederacy”, Colonel John Singleton Mosby, during the Civil War. Set in forty hectares of woods, Clifton is all understated elegance, with its charming interior design and the warm beauty of its rooms and suites. The murmur of the nearby Rivanna River, the gentle gurgle of the fountains and the soothing sounds of nature provide the soundtrack. On the programme are visits to historical residences such as Thomas Jefferson’s residence, Monticello, renowned vineyards, a culinary cabaret at the chef’s counter, a game of croquet and refreshing dips in the infinity pool.
