Malaysia is a microcosm of Asia and has inherited immaculate beaches and immense tropical forests. It is a country of many different peoples stretching from Thailand to Borneo and attracts those in search of adventure as much as those who wish to relax.
Malaysia has turned to exceptionally good account its eccentric geography, stretching as it does from its continental peninsula to two states on the neighbouring island of Borneo. It is a country with more than 4,680 km of coastline, on the South China Sea and the Malacca Straits. On the eastern side you find a succession of deserted beaches with, here and there, kampungs, those famous fishing villages built on stilts. There are also dream islands, such as Redang, Tioman and the Langkawi archipelago, which all offer the delights of the seaside and of deep-sea diving.
Malaysia boasts a chain of mountains which cuts its peninsula in two, from north to south, It is deeply forested, protected by national parks and is ruled by its wild animals... tigers, elephants, horn bills, orangutans and the rare rafflasia, the largest flower on earth!
The parts of the country which are farthest off the beaten track are populated by primitive peoples, the Orang Asli aborigines and the tribes of Sarawak and Sabah, on the island of Borneo. There are international travel organisations which offer the opportunity to visit this unspoilt Malaysia through tours or adventure treks.
The country’s cities Penang and Kuala Lumpur are also of great interest. The first boasts of being the gourmet capital of Malaysia with Chinese and colonial influences; the latter is the political and economic capital, where bold skyscrapers live cheek by jowl with ancient buildings of Arab, English and Malaysian design.
