Elegant Victoria, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, is not only the capital of British Columbia but the oldest city in Western Canada. With its well-preserved heritage buildings, Victorians are proud of their British heritage and historic downtown and, while the city is relatively uncrowded, it is eminently civilized. Taking high tea at the famed Empress Hotel is a “must” for every visitor. Victoria is also known as a “City of Gardens,” probably because of its year round mild temperatures and plentiful sunshine. The hundred-year-old Butchart Gardens bloom throughout the year.
Beacon Hill Park, the city’s main greenspace, has manicured gardens, wild peacocks, and a busy summer season of outdoor concerts. The ocean remains integral to the city and a center for the pastimes of fishing, sailing and whale-watching. The town also lays claim to the Royal British Columbia Museum, charming boutiques and a number of contemporary spas. Exploring the island by bicycle or scooter is popular throughout every season.
