This historic city, whose origins hark back to New France, is unique in many ways. Reminiscent of a small European town with narrow, hilly streets and centuries’ old stone buildings, Québec’s restored downtown has earned it the designation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dominated by the imposing Citadel, Québec is also the only walled city in North America north of Mexico.
For great views over the St. Lawrence River, walk across the fortifications or along Dufferin Terrace. Browse the many boutiques, art galleries and craft studios. Stroll through the Quartier du Petit Champlain, the oldest shopping street in North America. Wander around the revitalized Vieux Port, an important centre of banking and commerce in the 19th century. Hole up for a couple of days in a cosy « auberge » (inn).
If food is your passsion, you’ll find plenty to please your palate - from restaurants offering hearty traditional fare, to chic eateries specializing in fusion dishes and French cuisine.
