The island captures the true essence of Asia with a range of landscapes concentrated in a tiny area of land. Formosa, with its rice paddies, its jagged mountains, its tropical forests and its high-octane cities is a fascinating destination.
Taiwan, with its 23 million inhabitants, offers the perfect island, less than 200 km from the Chinese coast, for anyone who wishes to discover the treasures of the culture of the Far East. Every symbol of the nature and art of living of Asia coexist on this narrow mountainous terrain, with more than 100 peaks of over 3000 m. Its coastline is completely different. The jagged and wild Northern and Eastern coasts are in stark contrast to the Western and Southern coasts with their beaches and hustle and bustle. The cities compare favourably with their opposite numbers on the mainland. Taipeh, and also Taichung and Tainan, proudly display their liveliness and their skyscrapers, such as Taipei 101, the famous skyscraper (508 m) of the capital which is one of the highest in the world. The rippling paddy fields sculpt the inland landscapes into a succession of lush green terraces. Taiwan is the perfect place to relax and explore and, as is often the case in Asia, has in no way turned its back on its traditions. Chinese festivals, operas, puppet theatres, fine dining, arts of massage, Dragon boats, months of the spirits, rites of indigenous peoples…, everywhere you go on the island you come across these time honoured rituals as you experience the local hospitality and the drive of the Asian people.
