Perito Moreno and Patagonia

The Perito Moreno glacier in Patagonia is the most famous glacier in Los Glaciares National Park and is famous for its spectacular ice ruptures. An exceptional sight to add to the many attractions of the wide open spaces of southern Argentina.

The spectacle offered by the Perito Moreno glacier in the province of Santa Cruz, in Patagonia, is unique in South America. This ice giant, descended from the heights of the Andes, has a face which is 5,000 metres wide and 60 metres high, from which immense blocks of ice periodically break away into Lake Argentino. The glacier advances up to 2 metres a day. This national symbol and others in the same ice field are protected by a national park and are one of the foremost tourist attractions in southern Argentina, near the Chilean border. Not far away, all 3,375 metres of Mount Fitz Roy proudly dominate one of the most emblematic areas in Argentina. A land of wide open spaces and of explorers, it has inspired numerous writers including Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Bruce Chatwin. The south of Argentina and its steppes, whose grasslands have been turned over to extensive sheep rearing, is made up of huge estancias with the occasional isolated farmstead and solitary shepherd on horseback to herd the sheep. Here and there, whether on the Atlantic coast or inland, ports and villages at the farthermost ends of the earth play their part in casting the magical spell of a land made for adventurers and for visitors in search of nature at its most grandiose and a truly unique experience.
