Zeeland & Escaut Dam

In the north of the Netherlands, Zeeland represents one of man’s greatest challenges over nature: the reclaiming of land from the sea. The constant battle in this region of little islands, submerged land and dykes can be symbolised by the 1959 storm which raged over the region. On this occasion, it was decided to build dams to prevent the recurrence of a similar tragedy.

The Escaut dam is the most remarkable of these. This gigantic concrete and steel dam is 8 km long and 50 metres high and, as everyone can see, is one of the most impressive man-made structures!
