Ghent and Bruges
In the ancient county of Flanders, Ghent was a flourishing trade and industrial capital situated at the confluence of the Rivers Lys and Escaut. Its past might can be found in the belfry next to the cloth hall, St-Bavon’s cathedral and the Quai aux herbes. The city still has a lively trading tradition, embodied by its numerous markets.
From Ghent, do not hesitate to move on to Bruges, the “Venice of the North” and its port, Zeebrugge. The Flemish-style urban landscape is prodigious: belfries and market halls, the large central square and the Place du bourg, to mention but a few.
