Stuttgart

Stuttgart, capital of Baden-Württemberg, lies in a valley surrounded by orchards, vineyards and woodland. From its centre at the bottom of the valley, the city nestles into the surrounding slopes. Flights of steps and footways are on hand to help climb the steeper slopes. They are a characteristic feature of the city landscape and Stuttgart has over 400 such Stäffele.

Visitors flock to see the historical buildings featuring various architectural styles and periods, including the Altes Schloss, Neues Schloss (old and new palaces) and the beautiful Art Nouveau market hall. Of course, they are also attracted by the diverse culinary delights on offer. Next to these historic buildings sits a spectacular glass cube which has been the new home for the municipal art collection since spring 2005. The collection, spread over some 5,000 m², comprises artwork from the late 18th century up to the present day.

The Württembergisches Staatstheater encompasses a playhouse theatre and an opera house. The Staatsoper has now been voted German Opera House of the Year four times. Stuttgart’s State Ballet is world famous.

Stuttgart is a place that embraces the future wholeheartedly. Nowhere else in Germany have so many patents been filed. The region also has the highest concentration of academic and scientific research institutions.
